Alongside The Mission Continues and the UWT Service Coalition, UWT students are welcome to join in a day of service to celebrate MLK Day at the Tacoma Community House!
WHEN: January 13th 10am-4pm
WHERE: Tacoma Community House 1314 South L Street Tacoma, WA 98405
Tacoma Community House is a community service center for immigrants, refugees, and long-time South Sound residents seeking enrichment and pathways to self-sufficiency. For 107 years, they have helped countless individuals gain the skills they need to transition out of poverty, navigate a new culture, and find personal and professional success. We are also joining in partnership with the Mission Continues, a local chapter of veterans who are continuing to serve by engaging in a new missions at home. These partnerships are not just important for conducting physical volunteer services, but highlight the importance unity among different communities constituents for shared social values. There are important societal bonds we forge when we come together with others unlike ourselves: young, older, veterans, students, citizens, migrant community members, and so many more. And now especially, we have a need for the unity and social service MLK stood for.
We will be supporting their commitment to service provision in the Hilltop community by:
- Building lending libraries
- Removing shrubs and other small landscaping tasks
- Cleaning windows
- Demolition work to address safety issues
- And other property and space clean-up tasks
*All participants must wear long pants and sturdy shoes for this service activity, and sign up through the link above.
