James W. Harrington, Jr.
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
James W. (“JW”) Harrington, Jr. has served as UW Tacoma’s vice chancellor for academic affairs since 2011. His key goals in that position are to help the campus provide academic services for student success, to promote professional development among all faculty, and to encourage innovation by focusing on assessment rather than prescribing means of teaching and learning.
Harrington’s academic specialization is in economic geography; he is a Professor in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences and in Urban Studies at UW Tacoma and a Professor in Geography at UW Seattle. He has served as director of the Geography and Spatial Sciences Program at the National Science Foundation, executive director of the North American Regional Science Council, and secretary of the Association of American Geographers.
