New to Blackboard?

How to learn Blackboard? If you're new to Blackboard and want to get started, review the material below. If you still have questions,  we strongly suggest you attend a Blackboard Workshop or meet with an instructional technologist to learn more about the system.

The basics

How do I get a course site created on Bb?

First thing you need to, if you don't have one, is create your UW Tacoma Blackboard account.

You may request a new course shell in Blackboard by filling out the New Course Request form. If you cannot access the online form yet, just send an email to athelp@uw.edu. Include your course name and course ID. Once you have a site created for a particular course, you can reuse course sites each quarter by just clearing out old students and content by going into the control panel/packages and utilities/bulk delete.

I have a course site... now what? One your course site has been created, you will receive an email with the access code to give to your students so that they can enroll. As the instructor, you will want to begin to familiarize yourself with the Bb environment,  add content and develop your course site, visit the  Help and Tutorials page.
How do students enroll in my course on Bb?

Even though students are registered for your class, they still have to enroll for your course in Bb. When you request your course site, you will be given an access code for your course site. Students will need this code to enroll in your course. Under the Student Support Section, there are step-by-step instructions for students to create a Bb account and enroll in their courses. Please share this information with them to ensure successful enrollment.

How can I email my students prior to our first class? Through MyUW you can request your class email list. Once you receive it, you can communicate with your students about Blackboard and the access code that will be required for them to enroll.
I have heard about Catalyst, what is it and should I use it? The Catalyst Web Tools are a set of Web-based communication and collaboration applications designed for use in teaching, learning, research, and everyday work. They were developed by UW Seattle. It is not a Course Management System but does contain useful tools. Electronic Grade submission is done through the Catalyst Grade Book at the end of each quarter. If you would like more information, please contact Academic Technologies. It is possible to use Catalyst tools and link to them inside of your Blackboard course site (WebQ surveys, Gradebook, UMail etc.)
