This Spring Break, BreakAway will be going to Eugene, Oregon. Partnered with Friends of Buford Park and Mount Pisgah, student volunteers will be participating in learning and environmental restoration efforts. Participants will build skills, make meaningful connections, and make a difference in the community.

Spend your spring break doing service, building community, and learning. Do something different! Spend your spring break doing environmental restoration in Oregon. Student volunteers will be part of the team working to restore Buford Park, Mount Pisgah, and the Turtle Flats. 

BreakAway strives to create meaningful service immersion opportunities. Students on this trip will be required to attend all training, trip, and post-service dates.  

TRAINING DATES:  

  • March 3rd (MAT 107)
  • March 8rd (MAT 107)
  • March 22nd (MAT 107)

TRIP DATES

  • March 24-30th 

Transportation:  rides to and from our service projects are provided.  Students will start at the university (MAT 107) and leave to our service site in university vehicles. It’s a good idea to get dropped off with all the gear you may need and picked up in the same fashion.

Sleeping Arrangements:  We will have cabin style accommodations.  Students are asked to bring sleeping bags or bedding of their choice.  Separate changing, showering and restroom facilities will be provided.

Fundraising:  Each student is responsible for a $50 deposit (only).  However, each student will work with teammates to help raise extra funds with the direction for the breakaway coordinator.  We will set fundraising goals together at our first meeting.

Why BreakAway?

BreakAway doesn’t just impact our local and national communities, but gives participants lifelong skills and a more in-depth look at the social issues being addressed. Past participants have gotten job experience, internships, and more. Most importantly, they have gained a better understanding of themselves and the importance of community service work.

How much will this cost? 

BreakAway Trips are now posted. Please express your interest or get on our mailing list by contacting altbrk1@uw.edu

The required application fee for BreakAway is $50. This helps to cover training expenses. This is the only fee charged directly to participants. BreakAway participants are each expected to fundraise the remaining cost of the trip with the support of the BreakAway Coordinator and their BreakAway team (about 200 dollars).  We will cover strategy in our first training meeting. This can be done through personal outreach, fundraising events, and personal donation. We encourage creativity and collaboration to successfully raise this amount.  Any funds raised that are not used will be available for future BreakAway funding. If you need support with your deposit, contact the BreakAway Coordinator.

How do I join?

Site sign ups for Winter and Spring are now available. Summer BreakAway Registration will be available mid-winter quarter. Get on our mailing list or suggest a service location by contacting altbrk1@uw.edu.

Where will we go

Have somewhere you want to go or an issue you care about? Contact the BreakAway Coordinator with a proposal!

This year we will be working with Tacoma Pierce County Habitat for Humanity, Friends of Buford Park and Mount Pisgah, and Lifelong.

Past trips have gone to Tacoma Rescue Mission, Habitat for Humanity of Greater San Francisco, Disaster Relief in New Orleans, and Friends of Buford Park in Oregon.
