Global Health and Caring: Our part in the world

Marla Salmon is the Robert G. and Jean A. Reid Dean in Nursing and professor in Psychosocial and Community Health in the UW School of Nursing. She also holds a joint appointment as a professor in Global Health. She will presenting a special lecture on global health.

Prior to her recent appointment at UW, Dr. Salmon served as dean and professor at Emory University School of Nursing, where she served as founding director of its Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing. She has also held academic leadership positions at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Minnesota. A former director of the Division of Nursing for the US Department of Health and Human Services, Dean Salmon has been an integral part of policy development in nursing both internationally and nation-wide through her advisory roles.

Salmon’s research is focused in community and public health nursing, health sciences policy and nursing leadership globally. She studies nursing workforce policy and dynamics both in the United States and internationally. She recently authored the award-winning book Nurse: A World of Care which explores the role and impact of nursing around the world. Her work on this book has been honored with numerous national awards, including a 2008 Book of the Year award from the American Journal of Nursing.
