Distinguished Teaching Award

2016 Recipient

Dr. Yan Bai, Associate Professor, Institute of Technology.

Dr. Bai is ubiquitous in the Institute. She is a founding faculty member of the Information Technology degree program, having designed six of the program’s courses (as well as many other courses at the undergraduate and graduate level throughout the Institute). She has mentored dozens of students at undergraduate and graduate levels in internships, independent studies and student organizations.

Student evaluations of her teaching are among the highest in the Institute: students cite her passion, kindness and selflessness, which in turn inspire them in their personal and professional lives. As one nomination letter said, “It is almost as if the students feel a moral obligation to pay such kindness forward.”

Dr. Bai maintains an active research program, and incorporates her research into her teaching, through both her courses and her mentoring. She has served as faculty advisor to the Grey Hat Group, a student organization that focuses on network security and information assurance, mentoring them to success in an annual regional cybersecurity competition.
