Admissions

Eligibility

To be eligible to enter the Global Honors Program, students must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average (either from UW Tacoma or as an incoming transfer GPA). Exceptions may be made for students who can demonstrate outstanding potential and motivation.

  • Global Honors is a competitive program. Students will be selected on the basis of their GPA, unique perspectives, and ability to make an exceptional contribution to the program.
  • Students typically enter the program in autumn quarter of the sophomore or junior year as members of a cohort.
  • Space permitting, limited admissions are also accepted in winter quarter of the sophomore or junior year.
  • Students will not be admitted within their final 45 credits before graduation.

Current UWT Freshmen

Freshmen may apply to Global Honors in winter or spring quarter of their freshman year and join the Program in the autumn quarter of their sophomore year. Our 200 level introductory course, TGH 203 Themes in Global Honors (5 credits), is partly intended as a sophomore level gateway. Upon completing this course, you may proceed to the core curriculum in winter quarter of your sophomore year or, space permitting, resume Global Honors courses in your junior year. Space permitting, limited admissions are also accepted in winter quarter of the sophomore year.

In order to complete all requirements for the Minor in Global Engagement, Global Honors, or one of our alternative pathways, it is important to plan and tentatively commit to a two or three year schedule. Please discuss this with an academic advisor and the Global Honors Program Administrator as early as possible.

Current UWT Sophomores

Sophomores may apply to Global Honors in winter or spring quarter of their sophomore year and join the Program in the autumn quarter of their junior year. Our 300 level introductory course, TGH 300 Re-orienting the Global (2 credits), is partly intended as a junior level gateway, especially for those who anticipate a heavy credit load in Autumn. However, you may also consider TGH 203 Themes in Global Honors (5 credits). Upon completing either of these courses, you may proceed to the core curriculum in winter quarter of your junior year. Space permitting, limited admissions are also accepted in winter quarter of the junior year.

Current UWT Juniors

Space permitting, Juniors may be able to apply to Global Honors in the autumn quarter of their junior year and join the Program in the winter quarter of their junior year. In exceptional circumstances, very limited admissions might be accepted in spring quarter of the junior year. It is generally not possible to join the Program in the senior year.

Typically, most students join in the autumn quarter of their junior year and take our courses sequentially, starting with the introductory TGH 300 Re-orienting the Global (2 credits) or TGH 203 Themes in Global Honors (5 credits). Students who do start later than this must demonstrate they can complete all requirements for the Minor in Global Engagement, Global Honors, or one of our alternative pathways. Typically, this would involve catching up by taking TGH 300 in autumn quarter of the senior year while simultaneously taking the core course TGH 303 Global Challenges.

Please contact us directly via ghonors@uw.edu to discuss your options.

Transfer Students

Transfer students may follow the same guidelines as for UWT sophomores above, applying in the winter, spring or summer quarter prior to their transfer to UWT*. Space permitting, if you transfer to UWT at the beginning of winter quarter, limited admissions are also accepted at that time.

You must be enrolled at UWT before joining Global Honors. However, we understand you might not have received confirmation of UWT admission at the time of applying to Global Honors. You are therefore welcome to apply to the Program before receiving this confirmation. If you are unsure whether you intend to transfer to UWT, and admission to Global Honors may influence your decision, you are encouraged to apply to the Program as early as possible.

Please note, tentative admission to Global Honors does not in any way equate to admission to UWT or any other UWT program.

In order to complete all requirements for the Minor in Global Engagement, Global Honors, or one of our alternative pathways, it is important to plan and tentatively commit to a two year schedule. Please discuss this with an academic advisor and the Global Honors Program Administrator as early as possible.

*Please note, owing to other schedule commitments, transfer students who major in BS Computer Science & Systems, BS Computer Engineering & Systems, or BS Information Technology & Systems are unable to complete Global Honors requirements within their two years at UWT.

International Students

International students may avail of the same Global Honors benefits as our domestic students, including the Global Scholar Award of up to $750. If cultural exchange is an important goal during your time in the United States and at UWT, Global Honors represents an excellent opportunity to connect with diverse classmates and faculty from both the United States and abroad. Interdisciplinary honors programs also embody some of the very best the American educational experience has to offer.
