Student Accolades

Global Honors students are not only working hard in Global Honors, they are busy volunteering, obtaining scholarships and awards, working, serving on committees, raising children, and more!

2012

Margaret Lundberg had two pieces published by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in its annual anthology of writing, Nota Bene. Only 16 students were so honored, and Margaret's essay and short story were selected from among 950 entries.

2011

Lana Alisdairi is graduating Magna Cum Laude in June. She has been a community service volunteer at McCarver school and worked at The Ledger for two years.

Rachel Balla is a lead writing consultant at the Teaching and Learning Center and was nominated for the Haley IAS Writing Award in 2010 and 2011. Two of her short fiction stories were published in the 2011 Tahoma West.

Kathleen Burdo was a Gift of Service Award recipient and served as a Planned Parenthood public affairs volunteer. She works as a writing consultant in the Teaching and Learning Center, served as chair of the Services and Activities Fee Committee for three years and did an internship abroad in Hungary. In addition to Global Honors, she is earning an Honors IAS degree, the first student to do so. She has made the Dean's List every quarter she has been at UW Tacoma.

Lakeisha Danielle Davis is co-president of the Pre-Law Society Club and interned at the Department of Assigned Counsel in winter quarter. She was selected to be part of a student discussion with Archbishop Desmond Tutu during his visit to Tacoma and is an active community volunteer feeding the homeless. She will travel to Ghana this summer to study.

Monditza Cristina Fournier has been a community service volunteer and active member of GALA and the PP&E club.

Kelli Frank was a UWT-IZI (Munich) research scholar for 2011; she presented her thesis in Munich in March. She is graduating Magna Cum Laude. She served as a resident assistant for the Student Housing Program and a Recreation and Fitness Assistant.

Chelsea Graeff is graduating Summa Cum Laude in June. She did an internship at the U.S. Attorney's Office and was president of several student organizations. Chelsea has been accepted by Teach for America in the Bay area. She will attend UC Davis School of Law in fall 2013. She has been hired by Rocketship Group of charter schools in San Jose. She also received a Go! Global Scholarship, UWT Study Abroad Scholarship and a UWT General Scholarship.

Judy Jones was selected as the Chancellor's Medalist for 2011 and is graduating Summa Cum Laude. She was also a recipient of a Next Step Scholarship.

Tamara Joy Lafountain is a member of the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society and is graduating Magna Cum Laude in June. She also interned for Historic Tacoma.

Brittany Lawrence has been accepted into Pacific Lutheran University's Marriage and Family therapy program.

Jiwon Sarah Lee made the Dean's List every quarter and will graduate Cum Laude in June. Jiwon is a Philosophy Roundtable participant and a contributor to the Philosophy Roundtable Newsletter.

Catherine Ndungu is a community service volunteer.

Cody Lee Patterson made the Honor's list and Dean's List and has volunteered on numerous environmental projects.

Kayla Pevehouse graduates Summa Cum Laude in June and has made the Dean's List. She served as a STEPS program mentor and studied abroad in Cambodia last summer. She is a Freeman and Global Honors Scholarship recipient. She had a daughter, McKenzie Rose, in January.

2010

Lana Alisdairi is a staff reporter for the student newspaper, the Ledger. Lana will study abroad in Holland in Summer 2010 with the Urban Studies Program at UWT.

Dido Balla, originally from Cameroon, is a Writing Consultant at the Teaching and Learning Center. He recently won the Fred T. Haley IAS writing award for the short 2-3 page category.

Rachel Balla is a Writing Consultant at the Teaching and Learning Center. Rachel recently won the Fred T. Haley IAS writing award for the long 7-20 page category.

Shawn Boyd will study abroad in China during Summer 2010 to study film and history.

Kathleen Burdo is the Chair of the SAFC (Services and Activities Fee Committee) at UWT. She is also a Writing Consultant at the Teaching and Learning Center. Kathleen was granted funding through the HOPE Network to attend the War and Global Health Conference at UW Seattle this April. In June 2010, she will intern in Budapest through Central European University.

Maren Clifton currently volunteers as a math and social studies tutor at the Seattle Juvenile Detention Center.

Monditza Fournier will study abroad in Ireland and The Hague to study International Law.

Patrick Fuhrman is the treasurer for CIVITAS, a student organization that believes in bettering the community through active participation and volunteering. He is also a member of the University Disciplinary Committee and the Pre-Law Society. He was awarded a Global Honors Tuition Waiver Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year and studied abroad in Canada for his Urban Studies minor.

Chelsea Graeff is the President of the HOPE Network at UWT. She is also an associate editor for Tahoma West and a member of the Pre-Law Society. This quarter she earned an internship at the U.S. Attorney General's Office. In Summer 2010, she will study abroad in Ireland and The Hague to study International Law.

Judy Jones will study abroad in Canada in Summer 2010 to study environmental science.

Sean Judy is a Husky Promise student and has made the Dean's list each term at UWT.

Tamara LaFountain was awarded a $1,250 UWT International Programs scholarship to study abroad in Israel during Summer 2010.

Brittany Lawrence will study abroad in Tahiti during Summer 2010 to study communications.

Sarah Lee studied abroad in South Korea in Autumn 2009 and studied abroad in Germany in the summer of 2009. She is also a member of UWT's Philosophy Roundtable. Since her admittance to UWT as a freshman, she has volunteered with the Tacoma Rescue Mission and Habitat for Humanity.

Daniel Marlowe is conducting groundwater flooding research with Dr. Peter Selkin at the site of a former lake at Franklin Park in Central Tacoma. He will study abroad in Kenya Winter 2010 with UWT's study abroad program directed by Dr. Buck Banks and Dr. Jim Gawel. To help cover the expenses of the program, Daniel was awarded a $2,000 Go!Global Scholarship.

Cameron Neblett volunteers as the Cherry Parkes compost runner for UWT's pilot Campus Composting Program. He is the founder and president of the upcoming Action Cinema Club at UWT and is the Lead Programmer for the UWT Game Developers Club.

Kate Ndungu, originally from Kenya, will study abroad in India in Summer 2010 to study women in business.

Cody Patterson will intern abroad in India during Autumn 2010 with ATREE (Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment).

Kayla Pevehouse earned two scholarships, Freeman-ASIA Award - $1,000 and UWT International Programs - $1,250, for her Summer 2010 study abroad in Cambodia to study human rights. Kayla is also a STEPS Mentor at Lincoln High.
