American Studies

Degree requirements

For American Studies, you need to complete 55-65 credits, which must include a minimum of 30 credits of upper-division courses. Overall, 45 credits upper-division and 45 credits of IAS courses are required to meet the degree requirements. You must earn a total of 180 quarter credits, or 225 quarter credits for a double degree, to earn a bachelor of arts degree in your chosen major.

American course lists: American Focus | International Focus

Core List: Required 10 credits
  • THIST 200: American History I, 1607-1877
  • THIST 201: American History II, 1877-present
    (Must complete during first 45 credits at UW Tacoma)
American Focus List: Minimum one Individual and Society (I&S)
and one Visual, Literary and Performing Arts (VLPA) course

Language or International Course(s): 5-10 credits
Option one (5 credits): Students must demonstrate competency in a foreign language in one of four ways: three years of high school in one language, 3rd quarter foreign language at the college level, native speaker certification, or placement through testing in the second year of the language. Students meeting this requirement will need an additional 5 credits from the International Focus List.
Option Two (5 credits): One college level foreign language course beyond the first year, i.e. TSPAN 201.
Option Three (10 credits): 5 credits from THIST 150, THIST 151, or TGH 301; 5 additional credits from International Focus List

Natural World (Environmental Science): 5 credits
One TESC course or an Environmental Science transfer course. Please see an adviser for applicable courses. If certain courses with a TESC prefix are taken as a part of the American Focus, then this requirement converts to 5 open elective credits.
