A minor/certificate in Restoration Ecology provides training from theory to practice, giving you the skills necessary to participate as an effective team member and leader on challenging restoration projects. This minor illustrates to employers and funding agencies that you have completed fundamental training in restoration ecology, including a one-year team-based restoration project.
The modern field of ecological restoration showcases the necessity and merits of interdisciplinary approaches to real-world problems. Effective restoration of complex ecosystems and their human interplay requires a fusion of expertise from ecology, other life sciences, physical and social sciences and the humanities.
The minor/certificate in ecological restoration seeks to prepare students to address the complex relationships of human communities and ecological sustainability. The minor is a tri-campus initiative (UW Bothell, UW Seattle, and UW Tacoma). You may, but are not required to, take courses from more than one campus in order to earn the minor.
This minor/certificate will also be helpful for:
- Urban Studies majors interested in restoration projects in urban areas or how populations affect the environment.
- Business majors needing a background in the growing fields of "green" marketing and manufacturing or environmental management or who are interested in enviromental regulation and mitigation issues.
- Students who are interested in graduate school in environmental policy, conservation or restoration or in careers that utilize such knowledge.
- Interdisciplinary Arts students who wish to explore the emerging field of Eco-Arts and enhance the effectiveness of urban restorations.
- Biology students who are interested in the application of basic biological principles to recovering ecological function in human-dominated landscapes.
- Concerned citizens interested in learning more about environmental issues.
