Expedition Fellows

In 2012, the Office of International Programs launched Expedition Fellows, a unique study abroad program for UW Tacoma's first and second year students. Each year, Expedition Fellows provides an outstanding opportunity for a small group of students and a faculty member to explore an academic topic of mutual interest together in an international setting. What's Next?

In 2015, Expedition Fellows travel to Costa Rica on a program led by Dr. John "Buck" Banks. Expedition Fellows will focus on Sciences and Math (SAM) studies at UWT. This two-credit program gives students the opportunity to experience what it's like to study in the field and have a chance to develop a new, global perspective. For full details, check out Expedition Fellows Costa Rica 2015.

Eligibility and selection process

The application process opens in the fall quarter each year. An announcement is sent out to freshmen and sophomores in early fall with instructions on how to apply. Approximately 10 - 15 students are chosen to participate in this program. Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible to apply:

  • Full-time enrollment at UW Tacoma, and
  • Freshmen or Sophomore standing at time of application.

Student on the beachParticipants are selected based on the following criteria:

  • Potential for a transformative experience,
  • Personal and/or academic interest, enthusiasm and motivation for applying to this specific program,
  • Validity and feasibility of your project proposal,
  • Commitment to promoting international enrichment experiences among UW Tacoma students and/or other learners in the greater Tacoma community.

As part of their commitment to the program, all Expedition Fellows are required to complete an outreach project in a public forum to promote international enrichment experiences at UW Tacoma and/or the greater Tacoma community during the spring quarter. The goal of each project is to encourage participation in cross-cultural events, international education, exchanges, and other international enrichment experiences. Applicants have an opportunity to design and describe in detail what their projects will be on their applications. Examples include: a presentation at a K-12 school or other local organization or community partner, participation in a student event such as a student panel or presentation to a UWT student organization, public display of an art piece, creative writing published in an on campus journal or newspaper, an online Prezi, video or other web-based media project to be featured on the study abroad website and/or social media.

Applications are now being accepted. Complete application packets must be received by November 10, 2014 at 5 p.m. Applicants will be notified of acceptance decisions November 24th. Once accepted to the program applicants will need to confirm their participation in the program by December 1st.
