Expedition Fellows

Expedition Fellows

In 2012, the Office of International Programs launched Expedition Fellows, a unique study abroad program for UW Tacoma's first and second year students. Each year, Expedition Fellows provides an outstanding opportunity for a small group of students and a faculty member to explore an academic topic of mutual interest together in an international setting. What's Next?

In 2015, Expedition Fellows will travel to Costa Rica on a program led by Dr. John "Buck" Banks. Expedition Fellows will focus on Sciences and Math (SAM) studies at UWT. This two-credit program gives students the opportunity to experience what it's like to study in the field and have a chance to develop a new, global perspective. Full details for the 2015 Expedition Fellows program will be posted in early fall. Please check back for further information.

Eligibility and application process

The application process opens in the fall quarter each year. An announcement is sent out to freshmen and sophomores in early fall with instructions on how to apply. Approximately 10 - 15 students are chosen to participate in this program. Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible to apply:

  • Full-time enrollment at UW Tacoma and
  • Freshmen or Sophomore standing at time of application.

Participants are selected based on the following criteria:

  • Potential for a transformative experience and
  • Commitment to promoting international enrichment experiences among UW Tacoma students.

As part of their commitment to the program, all Expedition Fellows are required to participate in an outreach project to promote international enrichment experiences at UW Tacoma during the spring quarter. Applicants have an opportunity to design and describe in detail what their projects will be on their applications. Examples include: a presentation to the campus or other local community, participation in a student showcase event such as a student panel or symposium, or a video or blog to be featured on the study abroad website and/or social media.
