Expedition Fellows

It provides an outstanding opportunity for a small group of students, faculty and members of the community to explore an academic topic of mutual interest together in an international and/or intercultural setting. Fun City: Urban Tourism and Sustainable Urban Development

During spring break of 2014, Expedition Fellows will travel to the Netherlands to visit the following cities:

  • Amsterdam
  • Rotterdam
  • Utrecht
  • The Hague

Led by Dr. Mark Pendras, this two-credit program gives students an opportunity to learn more about Urban Studies at UWT. Students also experience what it's like to study in the field and have a chance to develop a new, global perspective. Full details for the 2014 Expedition Fellows program will be posted in early fall.

How much?

UWT Expedition Fellows pay a fee of only $500. Thanks to generous support from the UW Tacoma Chancellor's Office, the Office of International Programs is able to offer a significant reduction in the cost of participation for students selected for each Expedition Fellows program. Though the actual program cost is always much more; students pay only $500.

The program fee includes:Students in Costa Rica

  • Academic course (2 credits)
  • Roundtrip airfare
  • Lodging
  • Meals in-country
  • In-country transportation
  • Program excursions, entrance fees and guide services

The program does not include:

  • Costs for travel documents (i.e. passport, visa)
  • Study abroad insurance (required)
  • Meals/snacks in-transit
  • Personal expenses

Student eligibility and application process

The application process opens in the fall quarter each year. An announcement is sent out to freshmen and sophomores in early fall with instructions on how to apply. Approximately 10 - 15 students are chosen to participate in this program. Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible to apply:

  • Full-time enrollment at UW Tacoma and
  • Freshmen or Sophomore standing at time of application.

Participants are selected based on the following criteria:

  • Potential for a transformative experience and
  • Commitment to promoting international enrichment experiences among UW Tacoma students.

As part of their commitment to the program, all Expedition Fellows are required to participate in a project to promote international enrichment experiences at UW Tacoma during the spring quarter. Applicants have an opportunity to design and describe in detail what their projects will be on their applications. Examples include: a presentation to the campus community, participation in a student showcase event such as a student panel or symposium, or a video or blog to be featured on the study abroad website and/or social media.
