Message from the Director

Welcome to the Office of International Programs! We are pleased that you are considering an international experience as part of your UW education.  In today’s globalized world it’s important to have an understanding of other cultures and societies and there is no better way to gain this knowledge than by directly experiencing a different way of life and getting to know people and their customs first hand.  However, there are a range of benefits to study abroad beyond gaining knowledge of and appreciation for the practices and customs of different societies.  The experience will likely allow you to hone your language skills, it will contribute to your own personal growth and development, it will allow you to make new friends, and it will enhance your resume.  In short, it is an experience that will stay with you a lifetime.

So, I invite you to explore the opportunities that UW Tacoma offers.  This year we have programs going to China, Costa Rica, The Netherlands, Ecuador, Italy, Austria, and Buenos Aires, Argentina.  In addition there are internship opportunities in Peru, India, and Vietnam

For more information, I encourage you to contact our study abroad ambassadors.  They will be happy to meet with you to talk about these opportunities as well as the benefits of study abroad as both have participated in UW Tacoma programs in the past.  You may also feel free to contact me about these and other programs open to all UW students.

Finally, in considering whether or not study abroad is for you let me leave you with the words of Ibn Battuta, a medieval scholar who visited regions throughout much of the world:

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”
