Jazz Improvisation Workshop

Join jazz improvisation specialist and professional musician, Eric Patterson in a one-day jazz workshop for middle and high school musicians of all levels. Beginning level musicians meet on Saturday and Intermediate/Advanced levels on Sunday. Then on Sunday night, everyone joins up at THE SWISS, a local downtown Tacoma music venue, for an improv jam session. (Flyer PDF)

Beginner Class - Saturday, April 20, 2013, 9 -3 pm, UW Tacoma, Room CP 007
This class is designed for students with two-three years experience, who want an introduction to jazz improvisation.

Intermediate/Advanced Class - Sunday, April 21, 2013, 9 -3 pm, UW Tacoma, Room CP 007
This class is designed for students with three or more years experience, who may have some jazz band experience, and want to improve their solo skills.

Jazz Improv Session - Sunday, April 21, 2013, 6:00 -8:00 pm at THE SWISS, 19th and Jefferson. Friends and family welcome.

Tuition: $125 per person, includes lunch. Bring your instrument and music stand along with money for parking. Electric Guitar and bass players, bring a small amplifier. Drummers bring your sticks and share our drumset. Keyboardist bring your own keyboard or share ours.

9:00 - 10:00 am................................ Welcome!
Improvisation For Everyone. Improvise right from the start. We’ll play some blues and get down to business.

10:00 - 11:00 am..... Bebop & Pentatonic Scales
Learn how to use bebop scales to sound like Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. Use pentatonic scales to sound like a pro on major chords.

11:00 - Noon.................Create Your Own Licks
Use the scales you’ve learned to create personal improv licks. Learn the secrets to how the pros practice!

Noon - 12:30 pm....................Lunch and Listen
We provide sandwiches and a drink while you listen to some jazz classics.

12:30 - 2:00 pm....Learning the Jazz StandardsLearn three jam-session friendly jazz standards and professional tricks to memorizing and remembering tunes.

2:00 - 3:00 pm ................................ Let’s Play!
The class ends with an opportunity to use what you learn and play in a group. This is your dress rehearsal for the Sunday evening Jazz Improve session at THE SWISS.

SUNDAY 6:00 - 8:00 pm .......... JAM SESSION
Finish up the weekend with a jazz jam session at a local music venue and restaurant, THE SWISS. Friends and family welcome.

About the Instructor

Eric Patterson first fell in love with jazz while in school in Seattle. After graduating with a degree in music from the University Of Southern California, he decided to stay in Los Angeles.  As a professional musician, he plays jazz, pop, funk, and Christian music. Eric’s new album, “Mutually Assured Destruction” is now available on iTunes and at his website: ericpattersonmusic.com. In addition to playing professionally, Eric devotes much of his time to the art of teaching jazz and improvisation at local schools in Los Angeles using his revolutionary new tool for learning improvisation, TheJazzMethod.com.

Registration

Payment Policy: Tuition for classes and $10 registration fee are due by 5 p.m. three days before the class begins.

Refund Policy: Students must make a request to withdraw in writing. Written requests can be sent to keypdc@uw.edu or mailed to the address below. Students withdrawing by 5 p.m. 24 hours BEFORE the class begins, are eligible for a full refund of all tuition except the $10 registration fee. There is no refund for withdrawals after the first day of class.
