Registration Tips

How does registration work?

If you need a refresher course on registering for classes, check out this link. It will show you how to navigate the process.

The Registration Guide and the Time Schedule contain useful information on registration, class listings, tuition deadlines, important dates for the quarter, and final exam schedules. The Academic Calendar can help you find important deadlines/dates such as registration, adding/dropping classes.

When you are ready, you will register for classes using MyUW.

A few thoughts to keep in mind:

  • As enrollment increases, more restrictions will be placed on popular classes. Declare your option early to make sure the courses you need are open to you.
  • The Registration Guide or the Time Schedule will state whether you need entry codes for any of your classes. Entry codes for business classes must be requested by going to this web page. Fill out all required information. It may take up to 24 hours to send the entry code via e-mail. Learn more about entry codes here.

Do I Need an Advising Appointment Before Registering?

If you have met with an academic adviser at least once and have declared an option, you are in a good position to register every quarter, using your degree plan to make sure you take the proper classes.

However, you should see an adviser if you have any of these issues:

  • you are within 45 credits of your degree
  • you have outstanding admission deficiencies (like foreign language)
  • you are not sure where new courses fit in your option
  • there are some details that need to be handled (missing transcripts, etc.)

Some options are easier to understand than others. You can always e-mail an adviser with a "quick question" about your choice of courses to double-check if they are appropriate for your option. Send your questions to the undergraduate advising e-mail.

Tuition

Tuition is due about 2 weeks after the beginning of the quarter, not at the time of registration. It is your responsibility to pay the tuition on time even if you never received a bill. If you do not pay your tuition on time you will not be able to register for the following quarter or obtain copies of your transcript. Check the tuition deadline every quarter on MyUW or in the Registration Guide, and pay it on time.

More Tips

When a Course Is Full
When a class you want is full, we recommend choosing another section or class during your time of registration so that you are assured of having the number of credits you desire and a workable schedule for that quarter. However, you can keep checking the web, as students change their schedules and the section you want may open up.

Overloads
Overloading means registering for a course that is already full. Instructors decide whether or not overloads into their upper-division classes will be allowed. With their permission, entry codes are distributed by the department. If you are given an entry code, use it immediately because there are limits to the number of overloads allowed per class.

"A Full Load"
We do not require students to attend full-time. However, if you are receiving a scholarship, financial aid, veteran's benefits, or if you are an international student, check with the appropriate office to know your specific requirements. Full-time rate of degree pursuit is an average of 15 credits per quarter, three quarters per year. Your study habits, work schedule, and other responsibilities determine the appropriate load for you. 10-18 credits cost the same tuition.

Prerequisites
MyUW will enforce prerequisite requirements, so check the Time Schedule or Course Catalog to make sure you have taken all the required courses before you try to register. There may also be additional restrictions for a course, such as class level (junior and seniors only, for example).
