Submitting a Petition to Transfer or Waive MBA courses

Waivers

Students may waive up to 12 credits of MBA core courses.  A waiver does not exempt a student from that 12 credits, it allows substitution of a core course for an additional elective.  Waivers are granted when the student shows sufficient proficiency in the subject matter.

When submitting a waiver request the student must provide supporting documentation, examples include:

  • Professional licensure (if applicable)
  • Transcripts showing equivalent coursework
  • Syllabi from relevant coursework
  • A single undergraduate course in a subject does not make a student eligible for a course waiver; whereas, a concentration, major of minor may support a waiver.  For GPA requirements, refer to the Transfer and Waiver policy.

Before writing up a waiver request, contact the MBA adviser to ask for a syllabus of the course which you seek to waive.  You may also wish to contact the faculty member teaching the course to learn more about the course structure and content of the course.

To submit a waiver the request the student must write up a memo addressed to the Milgard MBA Faculty Committee.  Clearly the state the course(s) you would like to waive and the reason why you seek the waiver.  Please explain how your previous experience supports the claim that you are proficient in the subject matter and should be allowed to take an additional elective course.

Your memo does not need to be long, but it is needs to be clear, thorough and concise.  Email your memo to the MBA adviser who will review it for completeness before forwarding it to the MBA committee.

The MBA committee in consultation with the faculty member teaching the course you desire to waive will review the petition and make a decision.  The final decision will be communicated to the student by the MBA adviser.

Transfer

The MBA committee will accept up to the equivalent of 12 quarter credits from another AACSB accredited MBA program.  Credits earned more than 5 years prior to the start of the Milgard MBA will not be considered.

A student must submit their petition to transfer courses during the first 2 quarters in the Milgard MBA.  Before submitting the petition contact the MBA Adviser to receive a copy of the syllabus of the course which you are seeking transfer credits.

Be sure your memo asking to transfer coursework includes the following:

  • Clear statement of the course(s) you would like to transfer from the previous school and the course you feel it is equivalent to in the Milgard MBA.
  • Official transcript documenting a grade of 3.0 or higher
  • Course syllabus

Your memo should be emailed to the MBA Adviser who will forward it to the MBA Faculty Committee.  The committee will review your transfer request in consultation with the faculty member teaching the course you wish to transfer.  The MBA adviser will communicate back the final decision of the MBA committee.
