Howard Schmidt, White House cybersecurity coordinator, will deliver the keynote speech at this year’s South Sound Technology Conference, March 9, at the University of Washington Tacoma.

With more than 40 years of experience in government, business and law enforcement, Schmidt is one of the world’s leading authorities on computer security. He is responsible for orchestrating cybersecurity activities across the government as part of President Obama’s National Security Staff.

Schmidt has been instrumental in establishing the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) (PDF), a system designed to create electronic identities in cyberspace andprotect personal privacy. He was named one of the 50 most influential people in business IT by Baseline Magazine in 2008.

Civic and industry leaders, government representatives, university faculty and students come together for the South Sound Technology Conference, the largest technology event of its kind in the region. The conference increases awareness of how technology impacts our daily personal and professional lives, as well as the role it can play in the development of our regional economy.

Steve Jarvis, vice president for product operations at Expedia, will speak about the impact of mobile application development and travel. Panelists include: Janine Terrano, Topia Technologies; Linda Gerull, Pierce County IT; and Brian Forth, SiteCrafting. Other speakers will cover current technology topics.

Networking is also on the agenda. Company representatives will talk about problems they would love a smaller company to solve for them, and members of user groups and technology organizations will introduce themselves and showcase their expertise.

The afternoon panel will feature representatives of special-interest groups from the region, who will discuss topics as broad as the impact of social media, targeted areas of technology such as data integrity and information assurance, or even something as specific as SQL (a programming language) databases. Breakouts will include discussion of how to build solutions, networking and the upcoming South Sound Entrepreneurs’ Weekend. Attendees will have opportunities to review research projects by students at the UW Tacoma’s Institute of Technology.

Sponsors of the event include Washington State Economic Development Council, the City of Tacoma, the Institute of Technology and UW Tacoma, as well as the support of honorary co-chairs Congressmen Norm Dicks and Adam Smith.
