Office for Equity & Diversity
The Office for Equity and Diversity was created to help cultivate an institutional vision and commitment to diversity while ensuring an equitable environment for all members of the UW Tacoma community. This means paying attention to policies and practices involving management, leadership, communication, resources, scholarship, and community. It includes focusing attention on the demographic composition of UW Tacoma and our surrounding community of the South Puget Sound to be certain that we know who are our students, faculty, staff, and community partners in order to better serve and work with all. In addition, we address our institutional systems as a means of better serving all faculty, students, and staff. Because UW Tacoma's mission clearly states that the University exists to "educate diverse learners and transform communities by expanding the boundaries of knowledge and discovery," equity and diversity are linked to UW Tacoma's success and the academic achievement of UW Tacoma students.
Name Change Update
Dear campus community,
In December we asked you to tell us how we should re-name ourselves to align the Office for Equity and Diversity with its subunit the Diversity Resource Center. We proceeded with the re-naming as a result of last year’s audit of diversity issues on our campus that showed many people on campus didn’t know that there is a relationship between the Office for Equity and Diversity (E&D) and the Diversity Resource Center (DRC) because of our different names and the fact that we are not co-located.
To better align these offices, we sought your help in choosing between three final selections:
1. Office/Center for Unity & Inclusion
2. Office/Center for Equity & Inclusion
3. Office/Center for Inclusion & Social Justice.
The highest vote getter, and your choice, is #2: Office/Center for Equity & Inclusion.
Thank you for your help in selecting our new name! We think it’s great. J Because it will take us some time to change over to the new name (re-doing brochures, stationery, new signs, webpage revisions, etc.), we propose to work on these things over the rest of this quarter. At the beginning of Spring Quarter we plan a celebration to officially launch our new name. So, look for news of the upcoming celebration and, in the meantime, please be patient as we stumble over our tongues trying to use the appropriate titles!
