Minor in Corporate Responsibility

 

The forthcoming minor in Corporate Responsibility is designed for undergraduate students in any major at UW Tacoma to increase their understanding by providing a foundational understanding and set of tools necessary to navigate the evolving environment of corporate responsibility (CR).

The Corporate Responsibility (CR) Minor gives students a firm understanding of why good businesses operate in a way that builds value for all stakeholders, and how to best accomplish this in a strategic way. Students will develop a strong understanding of the evolution of corporate responsibility successes and failures as well as the tactical tools necessary to be successful in any career. The minor in corporate responsibility would be valuable for students from any major and/or concentration, as it will enhance your educational background in a way that will be understood and respected from across industries and sectors, including nonprofit and government.

Annual Case Competition

The CR minor will consist of 28 credits: 20 core credits, 5 elective credits, and a 3-credit seminar/culminating experience that will prepare students for careers in organizations that are socially responsible, sustainable, and ethical.

Before you can declare a minor, you must have declared a major and earned a minimum of 45 credits.

Learning Outcomes

  1. The value generated by doing “good business” in a way that maximizes environmental, social and economic return
  2. Alternative business models including Social Purpose Corporations, Benefit Corporations, Cooperatives, and other emerging models for encouraging shared value
  3. Multi-sector collaborations to solve big societal problems
  4. Impact Investing that considers the longer term impact of investments on all stakeholders
  5. Values based leadership and governance principles
  6. Innovative communications vehicles and authentic story-telling to maximize the value from an organization’s investment in purpose, impact, and reputation
  7. Selection, measurement, and reporting of metrics that will improve environmental, social and governance performance

Each of the required and elective courses below is 5 credits unless otherwise listed.

Program Structure

At least 18 credits required to be upper division, at least 60% of credits taken must not overlap with major requirements.

  • Corporate Responsibility Foundation Courses (20 credits)
    • T BGEN 212 – Introduction to Corporate Responsibility (5 credits)
    • T BGEN 312 – Communicating Corporate Responsibility (5 credits)
    • T BGEN 322 – Measuring Corporate Responsibility (5 credits)
    • T MGMT 420 – Managing Corporate Responsibility (5 credits)
  • Select 5 credits from the following approved electives: (Programs will advise students where to focus to best complement declared major.)
    • T ESC 201 – The Science of Environmental Sustainability
    • T EST 295 – Valuing Ecosystems Services and Natural Capital
    • T HIST 315 – Industrialization and Reform
    • T SUD 222 – Introduction to Sustainability
    • T SUD 444 – Green Internationalism
    • T SUD 475 – Community and Economy
  • Corporate Responsibility Capstone (3 credits, course number TBA) brings together all of the students’ learning into one culminating experience through our well-established case competition and corporate CSR conference.

Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all minor course work. A 2.0 GPA in each course required to earn the minor.

The CR minor has been approved by the UW Tacoma Academic Policy and Curriculum Committee, and is currently awaiting final approval by the UW Seattle Curriculum Committee when it reconvenes fall 2016. All courses approved for the minor are in the UW catalog.
