BSN: admission requirements

The BSN program admits students to the major in Summer and Autumn Quarters only. Full-time students must begin Summer Quarter. Part-time students may begin in either Summer or Autumn.

Application Deadline:  February 15
All application materials must be submitted by the deadline to be considered for admission.  After February 15, applicants are admitted only as space allows.

Applicants to the UW Tacoma BSN program must meet the following requirements: 

  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Washington.*  Advanced placement (junior year) credit is awarded based on verification of successful completion of NCLEX (RN) exam.
  • Associate degree or a diploma in nursing from an accredited nursing program*
  • One year of clinical practice (previous nursing school clinicals apply as experience)
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 in all college coursework
  • Read and agree to adhere to the Essential Behaviors for Admission, Continuation and Graduation and Social Networking Policy
  • Admitted students must complete criminal background check with acceptable results.  (Please be aware there is a fee for this service.)  For examples of offenses that would result in individuals being ineligible for the program, see the Department of Social and Health Services Secretary's List of Crimes and Negative Actions.  Contact the Program Director for additional information.
  • Minimum grade of 2.0 in each of the following prerequisite courses prior to graduation from the BSN program:
Intermediate Algebra Taken in either in high school or college
Foreign language Two years of the same language in high school or completion of college-level 102 (students whose native language is not English may be exempt from this requirement)
Writing 15 credits
Must consist of 5 credits of English composition; an additional 10 writing-intensive credits are met through required Nursing coursework at UW Tacoma
Visual, Literary and Performing Arts
(humanities)
15 credits
May be fulfilled through coursework at UW Tacoma
Individuals and Societies
(social sciences)
15 credits
May be fulfilled through coursework at UW Tacoma
General or Inorganic Chemistry 5 credits
Anatomy and Physiology 10 credits
May be satisfied by Excelsior exam
Microbiology 3-5 credits
May be satisfied by Excelsior exam
Advanced Mathematics 5 credits
May be petitioned upon completion of Statistics
Statistics 5 credits
UW School of Nursing Approved Statistics Course
May be taken at UW Tacoma

*Students enrolled in the last year of an associate degree in nursing program or those who have not yet taken the NCLEX may apply for provisional BSN admission prior to RN licensure.
