Faculty Update: Professor Joel Baker on microbeads

Main page content

In September 2015, Professor Joel Baker weighed in on microplastics--also known as microbeads--in an article about pollution in the Pacific Ocean in an article which may be read on Crosscut.

Thanks to Baker's research and the research of others like Dr. Julie Masura, on December 28, 2015, President Obama signed the "Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015" into law, prohibiting the manufacture and introduction into interstate commerce of rinse-off cosmetics containing intentionally-added plastic microbeads.

Baker serves the UW Tacoma School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (SIAS) as the Port of Tacoma Chair in Environmental Science and is Science Director for the Center for Urban Waters.
