The University of Washington Tacoma Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Social Welfare (commonly referred to as the BASW program) are accredited degree programs and alternative programs of the University of Washington School of Social Work. The MSW degree was established in 1998 and the BASW degree in 2002.

2011 BASW graduatesThe UW Tacoma Social Work program has strong ties to the community with nearly 100 of our current Social Work students completing practicum placements in the surrounding area, faculty conducting collaborative research with partners in our community and numerous alumni actively involved in service and helping professions largely in the South Puget Sound region.

In 2010 the Social Work Program established a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Criminal Justice. This program is unique in that it emphasizes a social justice perspective, designed to help students understand criminal justice issues from restorative and rehabilitative approaches

The MSW application packet for autumn quarter 2012 is now available. Applicants will need to submit an online application and fee to the UW Graduate School as well as complete all necessary forms and requirements outlined in the application packet by the priority application date of March 1st, 2012 for autumn quarter 2012 admission.   • Two criminal justice faculty members and their students have written a position paper regarding proposed cuts to the Tacoma Police Department. Their advice: think twice.
  • January and February are busy months for scholarship deadlines! The UW Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards has a listing of upcoming deadlines on their website, along with a scholarship search engine.
  • The Wrongful Convictions in Washington State Community Engagement Forum is to be held in William Philip Hall (WPH) on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Panelists include Alan Northrop, an exoneree from Washington state. The event is open to all students as well as the public.
  • Phi Alpha Honor Society and the UW Tacoma Social Work Program welcome nationally-recognized grassroots advocacy expert Nancy Amidei who will be presenting at the Third Annual Legislative Advocacy Event. Members from many local and national human rights coalition will be there to provide additional information on how to get involved in advocacy.
