How are services paid for?
Student Health Services is funded by UW Tacoma's Services and Activities Fee. Insurance is not required.
Office visits are free to current students include taking your vitals (blood pressure, etc), discussing your concerns, performing a physical exam, and developing a treatment plan.
Treatment plans may include medications, laboratory tests, vaccines, imaging (such as X-rays), or referral to a specialist or primary care provider — some of which may incur costs. As part of our commitment to affordable healthcare, most of these services are available at a discounted rate with an additional prompt-pay discount for uninsured patients. All costs will be discussed with you before an order is placed.
Students are responsible for the cost of their prescriptions which must be filled at a pharmacy of your choice. The healthcare provider will work with you to prescribe an appropriate medication option at an affordable cost.
Basic in-house lab tests (such as testing for bladder infections, strep throat, and pregnancy), are offered free of charge. Lab work sent to an outside laboratory (such as immunization titers, sexually-transmitted disease screenings, or anemia tests) are offered at discounted rates and will be discussed with you before they are ordered.
Labs that are not provided free of charge are processed through PACLAB Billing at a discounted rate. There is no minimum payment due at the time of service, and PACLAB can bill your insurance directly. If you choose to pay out of pocket or are uninsured, PACLAB will send you a billing statement that can be paid by phone via debit or credit card, or by mail via check. Uninsured patients who pay the bill in full within 25 days of service receive a 40% discount. If you are unable to pay the amount in full within 60 days of service, please contact the PACLAB Billing Office at 800-433-1583 to discuss payment plans.
Currently, all vaccines provided at SHS are offered free of charge for UW Tacoma students.
Imaging (such as X-Rays, Ultrasounds, and MRIs)
While we do not have onsite imaging, it can be ordered when needed and performed at a nearby imaging clinic or hospital. We will work with you and your insurance for any pre-approval requirements and network coverage. If you are uninsured, we will assist you in finding an option that works within your budget, when possible.
Imaging fees will be billed to your insurance, or directly to you if uninsured. Please contact that clinic’s or hospital’s billing as directed on your statement for payment information.
Specialists or Primary Care Providers
We can provide you a referral to a specialist as appropriate or assist you in establishing care with a primary care provider. We will work with you to find one in your insurance network. If you are uninsured, we will assist you in finding an option that works within your budget, when possible.
Primary care and specialist services will be billed to your insurance, or directly to you if uninsured. Please contact that clinic’s billing as directed on your statement for payment information.
Please do not hesitate to contact SHS with any questions regarding cost or payments.
