Course title: A Natural History of SH!T: Social, Cultural and Ecological Dimensions of Human Waste
Description: Industrialized and developing societies face an ecological crisis that now challenges the existing for dealing with the urine and feces of humans and our domesticated animals. From diapers to "sustainable toilets" to CAFOs, this course will use an interdisciplinary approach to trace changing perceptions and practices regarding waste disposal. Starting with theoretical questions regarding the nature of "shit" we will retrace its history from the Stone Age to the Information Age. Along the way we will pay close attention to the economic, cultural and environmental impact of waste disposal.

Description: How socially constructed differences- race, class, gender, nationality – in cities are represented in the media. Students will work in groups to make a film.
