Spanish placement testing

Students who intend to take a Spanish language course at UW Tacoma may need to take a placement test to be placed into the appropriate level course.

You need to take the Spanish placement exam if you:

  • Have taken a Spanish in high school
  • Have not taken any Spanish at the college level
  • Speak Spanish at home or are a bilingual or heritage speaker of the language

You do not need to take the exam if you:

  • Have never taken a Spanish class and intend to enroll in Spanish 101 (TSPAN 101) at UW Tacoma
  • Have an AP score of 3 or higher
  • Do not intend to enroll in a Spanish language course at UW Tacoma

Taking the Spanish placement test

The Spanish placement test is offered by appointment only. Please call the Office of Undergraduate Education to schedule testing at 253-692-4885.

There is a $25 fee for the placement test that must be paid in advance. Payment can be made by phone with a credit or debit card by calling 253-692-4669, or in person at the Cashier’s Office in MAT 354. If payment is made in person, please bring a copy of the receipt to the testing session to verify payment.

On the date of the test, bring photo identification along with your receipt if the fee was paid in person.

How the test works

The UW Tacoma Spanish placement test is a one-hour, timed test. All questions are multiple choice, including an audio portion which asked you to respond to recorded information. Your test results are available in 7 - 10 days.
