UW Tacoma Alternative Breakaway is a student lead program offering any student a week long volunteer opportunity to take a meaningful break from school to serve with others. Students will graciously donate to their break to make a difference in our communities and nonprofits while working toward their personal and professional growth. We aim to keep BreakAway accessible, regardless of students’ ability to pay. In order to keep costs down for student volunteers we need your help! All funds raised go directly to the Breakaway Fund to cover travel, lodging, food and training expenses for participants.
Fredrick Anex-Schnauss, Student Trip Leader
Working as the BreakAway coordinator this last year and a half I have had a lot of opportunity for growth. I am looking for support to attend this trip so I can continue to engage with students and support them in their fundraising efforts. In my life, volunteering has provided me with community and space to grow. While the classroom can often feel limiting, being outside and volunteering alongside my peers provides me space to escape the everyday, and to contribute meaningfully to my community.
I went on this trip last year and had an incredible experience working in the environment, learning about the region, and developing my leadership skills. Volunteering and civic engagement is an essential part of developing students to understand social issues in the community. BreakAway gives a chance for students who may not otherwise be able to engage in this work to succeed and learn more about social issues in an interdisciplinary team.
I am excited to be in this role supporting student leaders and practicing my skills as we return to Buford Park this year. We will be focusing on environmental justice and building a deeper understanding of the pacific northwest.
Your support helps make this possible, keeping the trip financially accessible as well. All funds raised go to cover food, lodging, and travel costs for this trip. Thank you for joining me in supporting student volunteers in having a successful and fun Spring BreakAway experience.
