Competitive Recruitments

UW Tacoma will hire all professorial and instructional faculty through competitive searches. Academic units may have a need for a temporary, one-year, full-time instructional faculty position to cover vacated positions, leaves or when current faculty take administrative positions. The following processes outline what is needed for promotion-eligibible positons and for temporary positions.

Faculty ranks and titles in this category of recruitemnt include Assistant ProfessorAssociate Proessor, Professor, Lecturer Full-time, Lecturer Part-time, Senior Lecturer Full-time, Senior Lecturer Part-time, and Principal Lecturer. Workday- For all competitively-searched faculty hires, there are three Workday business process that must be initiated. Use the ISC User Guides listed below:

  1. Create Position - Academic Personnel 
  2. Hire - Academic Personnel*
  3. Add Academic Appointment Track

*Please note that if hiring an Acting Assistant Professor, Pending Ph.D, hire will be into a JM sup org.  A position is not created for an Acting faculty member.


Temporary Instructional Appointments

UW Tacoma will make every effort to search for temporary positions using similar processes to competitive searches. These positions will be posted for 30 days. The primary title UW Tacoma will hire in this category is Lecturer Full-time, Temporary, with the intention that these positions will be for one academic year. On a case-by-case basis, units will be granted permission to hire a Lecturer Part-time, Temporary position on a quarterly basis, in cases of urgent instructional need. Use the hiring checklist for required documentation and to guide the UW Tacoma Academic HR and Workday Processes.

Workday-   For all temporary faculty hires, there are two Workday business process that must be initiated. Use the ISC User Guides listed below:
  1. Hire - Academic Personnel (hires will be into a JM sup org)
  2. Add Academic Appointment Track
 
Hires:
A faculty vote is required for appointment. The department faculty, by a majority vote, may delegate to an elected committee of its voting faculty the authority to recommend annual or quarterly appointments without a full faculty vote (Faculty Code Section 24-52 C).

Reappointments:
A faculty vote is required for reappointment (Faculty Code Section 24-53 A). The reappointment decision must be made at least six months (or in the case of an initial annual appointment, three months) before the appointment expiration date. Units must inform the faculty member in writing of the decision (Faculty Code Section 24-41 B).
 
Hires:
A faculty vote is required for appointment. The department faculty, by a majority vote, may delegate to an elected committee of its voting faculty the authority to recommend annual or quarterly appointments without a full faculty vote (Faculty Code Section 24-52 C).
 
 
Reappointments:
    A faculty vote is required for reappointment. The department faculty, by a majority vote, may delegate to an elected committee of its voting faculty the authority to recommend renewal without a full faculty vote (Faculty Code Section 24-53 A). The Dean of the School should specify that the vote was delegated to an elected committee in their letter to the EVCAA. Once per year, documentation of proof of delegation should be sent to UW AHR. Please submit a signed delegation memo to UW Tacoma Academic HR and they will handle working with UW.
     
     
     

      Teaching Associates are appointment dedicated to instruction. Please consult UW Tacoma Academic HR if you are not currently hiring for these positions but would like to in the future. Teaching Associates are appointed on a quarterly or annual basis.  Use the hiring checklist for required documentation and to guide the UW Tacoma Academic HR and Workday Processes.

      For all teaching associate hires, there are two Workday business process that must be initiated. Use the ISC User Guides listed below:

      1. Hire - Academic Personnel (hires will be into a JM sup org)
      2. Add Academic Appointment Track

      Reappointments:

      Teaching Associates must be considered and recommended for reappointment each year. There are no limits to the number of reappointments that can be made. Annual appointments must be given 6 months notice.


      Courtesy Appointments

      Affiliate faculty appointments are courtesy appointments given to faculty of the same rank or title at non-UW institutions or to content area experts who have experience in the field that qualifies them for the rank or title of the UW Tacoma affiliate appointment. Ranks and titles eligible for affiliate appointmnets include Affiliate Assistant Professor, Affiliate Associate Professor, Affiliate Professor and Affiliate Instructor. Affiliate appointments are on a yearly basis (07/01 to 06/30) and they are hired as unpaid academics in Workday.  Use the hiring checklist for required documentation and to guide the UW Tacoma Academic HR and Workday Processes.

      Adjunct faculty appointments must hold a primary appointment at the same title, i.e. Professor, Associate Professor, etc., in another unit at the University. For Adjunct appointments: https://ap.washington.edu/ahr/academic-titles-ranks/adjunct-lecturer/.

      Workday-  For all courtesy faculty hires, there are two Workday business process that must be initiated. Use the ISC User Guides listed below:

      1. Hire - Academic Personnel (hires will be into a JM sup org)
      2. Add Academic Appointment Track

      Hires : Courtesy appointments are hired on an annual basis beginning July 1 and ending June 30.

      Reappointments:

      Clinical, Affiliate and Adjunct reappointments are considered each year by the faculty or delegated faculty of the unit.

      Visiting Scholar can be reappointed for up to two years maximum.
