Snoqualmie-Tioga Update Project

We have an opportunity to bring together into a powerful alliance several fundamental parts of our student- and community-focused mission through a remodeling of the Snoqualmie-Tioga complex. These units, which are critical to our values of access and excellence, include the Center for Equity & Inclusion (CEI), Library, Teaching & Learning Center (TLC), and veteran-related services (VMRC/VIBE).

Engineering Labs in GWP

To support new degree programs in mechancial and civil engineering, UW Tacoma is converting some of the underutilized ground floor retail space in the GWP-WCG block to engineering lab space. Facilities Services has worked closely with the School of Engineering & Technology faculty and lab managers to design four types of labs in the space. Although it will reduce the footprint of the University Bookstore (at their request), it will not otherwise affect the retail space that fronts Pacific Avenue. Construction work is expected to begin in January 2021.

Milgard Hall (Academic Innovation Building)

UW Tacoma's next academic building is taking shape as a new home for innovation, where business and technology meet. We have completed pre-design and received design funding from the state for the building. The new building will be named Milgard Hall in honor of James A. and Carolyn Milgard and the Gary E. Milgard Family Foundations, who have provided lead gifts totaling $8 million. Their investment provides vital contingency leverage for the state’s decision to invest in this project.

In the predesign phase, UW Tacoma proposed a building that would be a minimum of 50,000 square feet. The building must be large enough to house the most critical elements of the proposed programming and provide the ideal amount of ground-floor space to make such programs highly functional. The proposed initial development meets the needs of a lab and classroom building, while furthering the campus master plan and improving accessibility at a campus scale.

The pre-design report was prepared by Hacker Architects (Academic Innovation Building Pre-Design Report - July 2018). Design funding was received in 2019 and UW Tacoma is the process of selecting an architect for the project.
