2013 Distinguished Teaching Award - Carolyn West

The subjects covered in Carolyn West’s class might make you squirm: rape and sexual assault, domestic violence, race, sexual deviance. The topics that bring discomfort and fear to many form the basis of West’s celebrated teaching and research career. For addressing sensitive subjects in the classroom with authenticity, respect and a healthy dose of fun, West earned the 2013 UW Tacoma Distinguished Teaching Award. Read more…

2013 Distinguished Research Award – Mike Allen

Mike Allen’s favorite toy as a child was a jigsaw puzzle of the United States. Years later, as a professor in interdisciplinary arts and sciences, he is still working with the “American puzzle,” putting together stories of this part of the world. For his published work and his mentoring roles with faculty and students, Allen earned the 2013 UW Tacoma Distinguished Research Award. Read more…

2013 Distinguished Community Engagement Award – Linda Ishem

2013 Distinguished Community Engagement Award – Janet Primomo

For Janet Primomo, community engagement is in the DNA of the Nursing program. Her work in asthma care and prevention is an example: since 1997 she’s been involved with the Puget Sound Asthma Coalition, securing funding for in-home consultations, training caregivers and evaluating outcomes. She’s helped inspire high school students with summer Nurse Camps, and helped to implement a chronic-disease clinic at area food banks. Read more…

2013 Distinguished Community Engagement Award – Michelle Garner

Michelle Garner makes connections between her faculty position in Social Work and her home life in Federal Way, Wash. She’s a leader of the Reach Out Federal Way homeless shelter, and she’s involved with City Vision Federal Way. She leveraged resources to restore water quality monitoring for nearby Lake Killarney, and she catalyzed efforts to secure federal neighborhood stabilization grants. Read more…

2013 Distinguished Alumni Award – John Harrison

Sometimes it seems John Harrison spends all his time in one of four places: at his desk managing the business affairs of a local car emporium, on the soccer pitch, on the ski slopes, or at UW Tacoma. For his service on the Milgard School Advisory Board, the Alumni Council, the UW Alumni Association and in countless other ways, Harrison earned the 2013 UW Tacoma Distinguished Alumni Award.
