A baseball game with a Husky theme! What’s even better than rooting for the hometown heroes on the field? Supporting student scholarships! On July 29, you’ll have a chance to do all of the above at the eighth annual Paint the Park Purple.

Paint the Park Purple has become something of a tradition for UW Tacoma.  The annual event at Cheney Stadium started in 2009 and has raised more than $110,000 for student scholarships.  “It’s a unique event because the stadium is actually decorated in purple and gold and the Rainiers wear custom Husky jerseys,” said UW Tacoma Director of Events & Sponsorships BrieAnna Bales.

Those custom jerseys are auctioned off.  The proceeds from the auction as well as all revenue generated from Party Deck tickets go into UW Tacoma’s general scholarship fund.  An additional $5 from the sale of every Purple or Gold Ticket is also used to fund scholarships.

UW Tacoma alumnus Nikolas Ahkiong attended his first Paint the Park Purple a few years ago.  He performed during an inning break with the a group from the Asian Pacific Islander Student Union.  He’d never been to a baseball game before.  “It was an amazing experience,” said Ahkiong.  “It was fun to talk with professors and other alumni.  Everyone was very welcoming.”

This year’s Paint the Park Purple is Friday, July 29. The gates open at 5:30 p.m. , and the game begins at 7:05 p.m. Adult Party Deck tickets are $35 ($15 for children 12 and under) and come with a free t-shirt plus all-you-can-eat barbeque and all-you-can-drink beverages.  Gold tickets are $20 and come with a free t-shirt, hot dog, chips and a soda.  Purple tickets are $15 and include a hot dog, chips, and soda.  For more information, visit Paint the Park Purple.
