Professor explores the complex biology of Mount St. Helens' Spirit Lake

Associate Professor Jim Gawel (IAS) will speak about the complex biology of Mount St. Helens’ Spirit Lake at 12:30 today, May 10, in Science 309.

Gawel is studying increased productivity in new shallow areas of the lake that were created when St. Helens erupted in 1980. Together with UW Tacoma students, he is constructing a combined hydrology and nutrient mass balance model of the post-eruption lake in order to understand the bioenergetics of the changed ecosystem.

Next Tuesday, May 18, is the 30th anniversary of the eruption of St. Helens.
