The U.S. State Department has announced that Diliman Abdulkader, junior in Politics, Philosophy & Economics, has received a spring 2016 Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad in Italy.
Diliman has served as a student senator, interned at Rep. Derek Kilmer's office, and is an advocate for the international Kurdish community via Kurdish Voice. He is a student in UW Tacoma's Global Honors program.
He is interested academically in international relations and human rights, and will spend his time as a Gilman Scholar examining European security. He has had a passion for politics since living in a refugee camp for seven years, after fleeing his home in Kurdistan.
About the Gilman International Scholarship
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is a competitive, merit-based study-abroad scholarship for Pell grant recipients, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. UW Tacoma, which has been named one of the best universities in the country combining excellence and access for lower-income students, has nurtured eight Gilman Scholars since 2014.
