Three UW Tacoma students have been selected as semi-finalists for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The prestigious grant program allows students to live in another country for a full academic year and immerse themselves in the local culture while researching, studying or teaching English. The program is named for U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright, who proposed a program in 1945 that has since become the U.S.’s flagship international education exchange program.

David Lee will get his degree in sustainable urban development from UW Tacoma’s Urban Studies program this spring.  He has applied for a master’s program in urban environment at University College Dublin. He is most interested in how urban planning can help to address urban violence and create peaceful, sustainable urban communities.

Maksim Rusev received a bachelor's in accounting and is currently finishing his master’s in accounting, both from the Milgard School of Business.  Rusev is no stranger to international travel and languages.  He is proficient in Spanish, Russian, and Bulgarian.  He studied abroad in St. Petersburg and Mexico as an undergraduate. He has family roots in Bulgaria and is now hoping to live in the country as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant.

Clarke’s, Lee’s, and Rusev’s applications have been forwarded to their proposed host countries where final award decisions will be made. Those decisions will be announced in spring 2016.
