UW Tacoma received an important update about the GI Bill concerning the COVID-19 national emergency. You can view the full text by expanding the section below.

The Senate and House passed S.3503, and the bill will be headed to POTUS to sign, which will give the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) the authority to continue GI Bill payments uninterrupted in the event of national emergencies. The new law allows VA to continue to pay benefits, although the program has changed from resident training to online/remote training. Students will also continue to receive the same monthly housing allowance payments that they received for resident training until January 1, 2021, or until the school resumes normal operations of resident training. VA is working to immediately implement the new changes to address current and future school terms to ensure students continue to receive their education benefits.

What should GI Bill Students know?

  • For Chapter 33 and Chapter TOE students, the VA rates will remain the same for Resident/Hybrid courses that moved online (eLearning or Remote).
    • Any online courses that were original online will stay the same. Please note, if the whole schedule was with all online courses, please review UWT Time Schedule, it will be half the stipend rate.
  • The VA will pay for S and CR grades as normal. Although the VA does not typically make payments for courses resulting in NS or NC, the VA will pay for the course if COVID-19 is reported as a mitigating circumstance.
  • If you have questions about your specific circumstance, please contact the Education Call Center at 1-888-442-4551 between 8 AM and 7 PM Eastern Time, Monday-Friday.

Please reach out to the VMRC if you have any concerns or are experiencing any impacts on your VA education benefits.

The Veteran & Military Resource Center cannot provide in-person services at this time due to precautions around COVID-19. Staff members are working remotely and can be reached by email. For general inquiries, please contact uwtva@uw.edu.

About the Veteran and Military Resource Center

The Veteran and Military Resource Center (VMRC) at UW Tacoma serves as a resource for students providing support and referrals throughout campus and our community. The VMRC is also responsible for developing and offering campus programming that benefits our military-connected students. The VMRC comprises two staff: the Veteran and Military Services Staff and the Veterans Incubator for Better Entrepreneurship (VIBE) Staff.

The Veteran and Military Services Staff is here to help military veterans and their dependents access their VA educational benefits and Washington state tuition waivers. Our benefits advisors can provide you with general benefit information as well as certify your educational services.

Co-located in the VMRC space is VIBE. VIBE provides an applied training environment that supports military veterans’ entrepreneurial aspirations and promotes their understanding of the current startup life cycle.

Alaska Airlines began sponsoring the VMRC location in 2016. This sponsorship includes a ten-year $20,000 annual donation to the center—the fund aids in providing student supportive programming and VIBE event backing.
