It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr. Jill Purdy has accepted my invitation to serve as UW Tacoma’s next Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Purdy has been serving in the role in an interim capacity for the past year. A tri-campus search coordinated by an outstanding search committee provided feedback from many campus stakeholders. Based on this information, I feel Dr. Purdy is the best person to carry forward the good work that has been initiated by Academic Affairs in the last several years.
I am excited that we will benefit from Dr. Purdy’s long experience with our campus. She is a founding faculty member of the Milgard School of Business, having arrived at UW Tacoma in 1994. She served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education in 2016-17, and she was the UW Tacoma Faculty Assembly Chair in 2013-14. Dr. Purdy has a deep understanding of faculty governance and has forged strong working relationships with faculty leaders across the tri-campus system. This experience and familiarity with our campus and UW complements my tenure as Chancellor.
Dr. Purdy has a rich scholarly background, having served as a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Associate Professor at academic institutions in Iceland and Finland. Jill is very well known in the Tacoma community and has developed significant relationships through her work with the Milgard School of Business and the Center for Leadership and Social Responsibility.
Dr. Purdy will begin her new role on May 1, 2018.
I also want to acknowledge the excellent work of Dr. Ali Modarres, who has been serving as chair of the UW Tacoma Board of Deans and Directors for the past year and has provided vital support for our Academic Affairs enterprise during this transition period.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Purdy to the campus leadership team and thanking Dr. Modarres for his continued service.
