As we conclude an academic year unlike any other in our history, work to develop the details of our fiscal year 2020-2021 budget (FY21) is concluding.
The year has ended with many things being undetermined. The level of state support we can expect in FY21 is uncertain. Given the challenges facing our Tacoma community, we need to be conservative in our enrollment projections. Our auxiliary income and fees are in suspension.
The budget reductions that were modeled by administrative units in FY20 and by academic units for FY21 have been made. We are making some critical investments now that are core to our mission to support online learning, equity & inclusion, strategic enrollment planning and student retention.
Any other new investments must be deemed essential and will have to be made very conservatively.
Everything we are doing today and will do going forward prioritizes the principles found in our sustainable campus plan: student success, publicly-engaged scholarship, equity, keeping our UW Tacoma community together and remaining a committed partner to our South Sound community during these challenging times.
The UW Board of Regents voted to approve the overall UW FY21 budget yesterday, which includes the general plan for UW Tacoma approved by President Ana Mari Cauce and Provost Mark Richards in April. Consistent with established procedures and due to the economic crisis caused by the pandemic, this plan will not include a 2% merit increase for faculty nor a merit increase for professional staff. As a reminder, most classified staff salaries are set by contract.
The following documents are now available for your review on the UW Tacoma Finance & Administration website:
- FY21 core revenue and expense estimations as of June 7 (Note that this report presents only UW Tacoma’s core budget and does not include auxiliary, self-sustaining, gift/grant or revenue budgets)
- A summary of reductions and allocations made to administrative and academic units in FY21 is available at the core budget link above: refer to the charts under “Decision 4” and “Decision 5”
- A report on the status of campus reserves (see GOF and DOF reserve balances)
I appreciate your hard work and dedication as we navigate these unprecedented times.
