In-Person Courses at the University Y (UWY)

Students that are registered in classes meeting at UWY received this message in an email on September 2, 2020.

As the building is a partnership between UW Tacoma and the YMCA, students, faculty, and staff who are designated as members of the Y can access the building. When students, faculty, and staff enter the building this quarter, they will go through the following process:

Facility Access: The only entrance/exit available will be the Main Entrance on Market Street.

Temperature Checks: The Y Staff will be checking the temperature of every person who enters the space with a contact-less thermometer.

Health Questions: The Y Staff will be asking these questions related to Covid-19 Prevention:

  1. Have you been diagnosed with COVID-19 and have not recovered or are still within the required 14-day quarantine?
  2. Have you had symptoms of COVID-19 within the last 24 hours? Symptoms include: cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing, fever, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, new loss or taste or smell
  3. Have you had contact with a person that has or is suspected to have COVID-19 within the last 14 days?

Scanning your membership card: Y Staff will be recording who is accessing the space by scanning the Y Membership card that any UW Tacoma member must have with them to use the space

The entry process may cause a line to form so the UW Tacoma community should keep that in mind. The Y staff will work diligently to assist you. Students receive membership to the Y by enrolling for the quarter and paying the University Y Student Center Fee (read about student fees at this website).

First time using the University Y Student Center?

You should give yourself enough time to complete the YMCA entry processes as well as activate your Y membership for the first time. You will need to provide necessary information to the YMCA as well as have a Membership Card created. It is highly encouraged that you activate your membership prior to your first day of class and in addition begin to familiarize yourself with the facility layout.

Already have an active Y Membership?

Give yourself enough time before your class begins to proceed through the YMCA Covid Prevention procedures, which may cause lines to form.

The University Y will officially open doors on September 7th.

Initial hours of operation will be

M-F / 7:00am -7:00pm
Sat / 7:00am – 1:00pm
Sun/ Closed
