Take a deep breath!

So,  you are starting a new adventure at UWT. Congratulations! Entering the digital space here can be a little intimidating for anyone, but once you get the hang of it, you will do fine. Remember to ask questions, enjoy yourself and most of all, remember to relax and breathe! We have put together some short orientations to prepare you for your digital work! Go through these orientations BEFORE class starts!

Follow these simple steps to get ready!

STEP 1: Setup your UW Email

UW Google Email

Google Apps Email - Ad-free email with 25 GB of storage and continued use of your email addresses. Follow the steps below to start using UW Google Apps/Email. Go to the Manage UW Google Apps page to activate the service and set your UW Google Apps password.  You can access your UW Google email and all other UW Google Apps services by going directly to and logging in with as your username. You may also configure UW Google Apps Email on just about any desktop email program or mobile device using instructions provided by Google.

*NOTE: Nursing and Healthcare Leadership students MUST use UW Deskmail (Alpine) for email. Check with your department if you have not received instructions for setting it up!

Can I forward my email to my personal account?

Please do not forward your UW email to your personal email account. When you activate your UW Windows Live or UW Google email, you will have the opportunity to change your email forwarding to UW. Refer to the UW Tacoma email policy for more information. You can Check Your UW Email Forwarding anytime.

Where do I go to check my email?

Once you activate your email, you can access your UW Google mail through MyUW or by going directly to and entering email address.

Logging into Multiple Google Accounts

One of the issues which most people struggle with is having to switch between their UW Google account apps and their personal Google account apps.  There is an easy solution for this problem that allows you to access all of your Google accounts in one browser.  For example, you can have your UW Gmail and your personal Gmail open in separate windows in the same browser.  There are really important reasons related to FERPA (discussed on the UW Gmail page) that you might want to keep these two email accounts separate from one another.  However, if you follow the instructions below, you can keep them separate AND access them both conveniently without having to log out and re-login.

STEP 2: Explore Google Apps

Google Drive - Access files from all your devices anywhere, anytime!
Now that you have Google setup for your UW email, you get instant access to Google Drive! Google Drive is a free web-based office suite containing tools for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, and online forms. Users can create new documents or upload existing Microsoft Office documents to edit and share in Google Drive with others. Your files are always waiting for you at, but you can also get them straight from your computer, smartphone, and tablet.

hangout iconWith Google+ Hangouts you can hold study groups, conduct interviews, or collaborate on group projects face to face without geographic constraints. A Hangout is, essentially, a free web conferencing tool with room for up 15 people. When starting your hangout you can choose your different friends to hang out with.  It then opens the room and allows anyone from your selected circles to join in the hangout, collaborate on shared documents, share your screen with others, and view YouTube clips together while carrying a discussion at the same time. All you need is a webcam and microphone to get started.

With Hangouts there’s no need to download a separate application — a simple browser plug-in enables hangouts on any computer with a web browser, webcam, and microphone. (You can join a hangout without a webcam or microphone, but you'll have a more limited experience without them.)

Google Sites is an easy-to-use web page creation tool. Web sites can be created quickly using pre-defined templates that allow you to add content, upload images, and embed documents and videos from other sites, such as Google Docs or YouTube. STEP 3: Familiarize yourself with Canvas

Once you have access to your online class(es), explore them. Take the time to go through the course in Canvas. Pay attention to how the course is organized and click each and every link to see where they take you, and get comfortable navigating through the class. Review our tutorials on the Getting Started with Canvas page to learn how to do common tasks in Canvas, like submiting assignments, posting discussions and communicating with your instructor.

Google Drive icon   Google Drive, one of the UW Google Apps, lets you create, store, share and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets and presentations online, all in real-time. You already learned all about how to use your Google Drive by watching the video in Step 2 above.



       Your personal "H" drive is your secure, personal space. No one else has access to this space, so it is not appropriate for sharingor collaborating on files with others. Instructions for how to login to your "H" drive from off campus using Remote File Access can be found on the Network Access webpage.

Refworks is a web-based personal citation databases and bibliography creators that allow you to import, store, and share your research citations and automatically format your bibliographies into whatever style you need (APA, MLA, Chicago, and many more).

Microsoft IT Academy at the UW: Free training for UW students, faculty, and staff

Students, faculty, and staff can access extensive, free Microsoft IT Academy online courses and learning resources. Hundreds of video-based courses are available through October 2012. Completion of the training could enhance student employability as well as increase staff efficiency on applications such as Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Windows 7. Microsoft IT Academy at the UW provides courses in digital literacy (for basic computer skills) and e-learning (for advanced learning including certifications).


STEP 5: What you need if you come to campus.

Because of your busy schedule, you may not have the opportunity to come to campus often, but if you do, make sure you have what you need!


Bring your Husky Card ID with you. You will need it to access computer labs, equiptment, check out library materials and take advantage of discounts around campus. ID cards are not issued until the week before the quarter starts and can be obtained through the Office of the Registrar.


You will need your UWT Network Account informaiton to login to campus computers.

How do I get one?

If you are a current UW Tacoma student, you must have a network login account to access campus computers. Network login accounts will be automatically generated for all new students after you:

Register for your first quarter of classes

Activate a cloud service (either UW Google or UW Windows Live)

How do I login to a computer on campus?

To login to a Tacoma campus computer, your username will be and your first password will be your student number (minus any leading zeros). Students in the Institute of Technology have special logins for the Institute labs. These login accounts are managed by the Institute of Technology, so please contact them for assistance.

What if I forget my password?

If you forget your password and cannot login to a campus computer, please visit the helpdesk in Walsh Gardner 108, call 253-692-4357 or email

Practice some commonly used tasks...

Courses at UWT often require students to perform different online tasks. Along the way, you will most likely need to know how to:

  • Use email and attach documents.
  • Post to a discussion board and reply to other students.
  • Submit assignments to a dropbox and/or upload them to a site.
  • Search an electronic database in an online library.
  • Sign-in to an online classroom, and possibly how to use a microphone and webcam to communicate.

It doesn’t hurt to review our online video tutorials and documentation on these tasks or practice them in the actual course itself. For example, try sending an email message with an attachment to yourself before a class begins. Practice uploading a photo, video, or document to a social media site (e.g., Facebook or YouTube). Setup a webcam and microphone and create a Google Hangout with a friend. Go into the Academic Support pages and learn about how to get help and services if you need them!

The goal is to make each one of these activities and processes as natural for you as possible.
