Applying for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare program is a two-step process, requiring an application to the University and an application to the BASW program.

Plan ahead

The BASW program admits new students for autumn quarter only. Applicants should have all required forms and transcripts submitted on or before the application deadline to be considered "on-time." Applications received after the application deadline will be reviewed on a space-available basis and may be placed on a wait list. Admission is competitive.

Academic credit toward the BASW is not given for previous employment or life experience.

Social Welfare application materials

Print a copy of the Social Welfare Application materials . The materials include the application, instructions for applying, guidelines for the admissions essay and resume, Conviction/Criminal History Information form and Authorization for Repeat Background Checks and Dissemination Results Forms .

How to apply

Depending on your status, the application form and process may vary:

Current UW Tacoma students

Current students must complete a Request to Declare/Change Major form and submit all required BASW application materials to the program for consideration.

  • Review the list of admission requirements for the Social Welfare major.
  • Complete the Social Welfare Application, which includes an admissions essay, current resume, Conviction/Criminal History Information form and Authorization for Repeat Background Checks and Dissemination Results Forms.
  • Submit an unofficial copy of your UW Transcript (print from My UW).

Transfer students

Applying to the BASW program is a two-part process requiring application to the University and submission of required BASW application materials.

If you are transferring from a CSWE accredited BASW or BSW program, please contact the Social Work and Criminal Justice Program office at 253-692-5820 for further information prior to submitting the transfer application.

Returning UW Tacoma students

If you were previously enrolled at UW Tacoma, submit a Returning Student Application in lieu of the Application for Transfer Admission.

  • Complete the Returning Former Student application.
  • Returning students may also need to submit supplemental material to the Social Welfare program. Check with the program advisor for details.

International students

Running Start students

  • Complete the Application for Freshman Admission.
  • Submit official transcripts for every college or university attended.
  • Complete the Social Welfare Application, which includes an admissions essay, current resume, Conviction/Criminal History Information form and Authorization for Repeat Background Checks and Dissemination Results Forms.
  • Running Start students must complete a Request to Declare/Change Major form to the program for consideration. Please attach this form to your Social Welfare Application materials.

All Students

Bring application materials to the Social Work and Criminal Justice Program Office at WCG 203 or mail them to:
