The University of Washington Tacoma recognizes the experience of first generation students and their success in pursuing higher education. Not only is this day being acknowledged at UWT, but it is a nationally recognized event that will also be celebrated in many other educational institutions. #CelebrateFirstGen #FirstGenUWTacoma

 

Preliminary schedule for the November Celebration

Monday, November 4th & Tuesday, Nov 5th: The First 

Distribution of mini-whiteboards
9am – 3pm (both days)
Mattress Factory 213, UW Tacoma

  • Grab a mini whiteboard at MAT213, TLB307A or WCG102
  • Students, faculty and staff will be provided with mini-whiteboards where they will write and share what being the first means to them. They will take pictures at their favorite places on campus, and then use the hashtag #FirstGenUWTacoma to share on social media.

Wednesday Nov 6th: Pledge of Commitment 

Board display for signatures
9am – 2pm
Dawg House Student Lounge, UW Tacoma

  • A signature board will be available for students to share how they will commit to achieve their graduation goals.

Thursday Nov 7th: “I Support First Gen”

  • Opportunity for faculty and staff to share how they support first-gen students on our campus. A signature board will be provided for them to share how they support first-gen students.

  • Those who submit will receive a sticker via campus mail that can be displayed in their offices. Included with the sticker will be a guide with strategies on how to support first-gen students.

Friday Nov 8th: First Generation College Celebration

12:30 p.m. – 2 p.m.
William Phillip Hall, UW Tacoma

  • UW Tacoma will celebrate the 3rd Annual National First-Generation College Celebration by honoring first-generation stories.

  •  This event will feature a keynote address from UWT’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life, Bernard E. Anderson.

  • Additionally, students will have the opportunity to sign their pledge as first-generation students to finish their four-year degree.

We are First Generation Story Campaign

During this event we will unveil our 4th Annual “We Are First Generation” stories campaign. Here we feature the voices of first-generation college students, faculty, staff and alumni from UWT. All selected stories will be shared with our UWT campus community. We will also highlight one story each month on our social media and website using the hashtag #FirstGenUWTacoma
