2021 Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare (BASW) Application The BASW major offers an annual autumn start. Applicants must be admitted to UW Tacoma to complete this application and be considered for BASW admission (your UW Tacoma student ID number is required). BASW Admission Requirements BASW admission requirements should be reviewed at https://www.tacoma.uw.edu/uwt/swcj/basw-admissions prior to submitting this application. To be considered for the BASW progra admission, applicants must be admitted to UW Tacoma (with completion of the intermediate algebra entrane requirement). Applicants with in-progress prerequisites can be considered for BASW admission and are encouraged to apply. Admissions Review Timeline The annual priority application deadline is March 15. At this time we are still accepting applications! Applications submitted after the priority deadline are reviewed on a space-available basis until the program is full, at which time the application will close. BASW applications completed by the March 15 priority deadline are assured a review; applications received after the priority deadline will be reviewed on a space-available basis. Admission decisions for the priority applicant pool will be made in early June. Applicants will be notified of admission decisions by email. Applicants who are not offered admission for the current program start must reapply. All materials submitted for admission consideration become property of the UW Tacoma School of Social Work and Criminal Justice and will be retained per the University of Washington’s records retention policy schedule. Materials submitted cannot be reused for future application. Application Instructions If you are not a current UW Tacoma student, you must first apply for admission to the university. Once you are admitted to UW Tacoma and have a student ID number, you may submit your BASW application. The following documents are required to complete the BASW application. You are not able to save an in-progress application; applicants are encouraged to prepare and save these materials as PDF documents prior to starting this webform application. Applicants should carefully follow the instructions provided and be as thorough as possible within the set guidelines. ESSAY The admissions essay is a critical element in the review of each applicant's qualifications. The essay should be typed, double-spaced with a font size of 11 or 12. Both essay parts should be submitted in a single document (no more than 2 pages total), with each part of your essay clearly titled. Part A. Please give a brief (one page maximum) autobiographical statement that supports your interest in a social work career. Include information about the following: > Any special obstacles that you have met and overcome. > Examples of leadership. > Other influences (either positive or negative) that have shaped your interest in social work. Part B. Please describe your volunteer or work experiences that related to social services (one page maximum), including: > Your duties as a social service provider. > What you learned from the experience. > How the experience has influenced your career goals. > Any involvement with disadvantaged populations. > Any involvement with social issues. RESUME Provide a resume of experiences that related to social services (one page maximum) that include the following: > Special awards, achievements, and/or honors that you have earned. > Special skills (e.g. bilingual skills, artistic talent, research skills, etc.). > Any social service experiences, either paid or unpaid. Include dates and total hours of involvement per experience. AUTHORIZATION FOR REPEAT BACKGROUND CHECKS Washington state law requires that individuals who have access to children under 16 years of age, persons with developmental disabilities and vulnerable adults such as older people disclose background information. During your education in the Social Work program, you will come into contact with members of the above-mentioned populations. Therefore, a comprehensive background check is a required part of the admission process. Applicants must submit an Authorization for Repeat Background Checks and Dissemination of Results form (to download, please click on link in name) with their BASW Application. All applicants offered admission must initiate the background check within two weeks of receiving your offer letter. Please be aware that this service is fee-based and subject to price changes.
