Winter Orientation

Husky Orientation Week is your academic and social orientation to the UW Tacoma and helps you transition to life as a new Husky. This is your chance to meet your new classmates, meet peer mentors, learn about UW Tacoma’s academic, social, and campus expectations, and to have fun! Completing an orientation (on campus or through Canvas) is required for all students before receiving your Husky ID card. Transfer students can register for classes prior to orientation but are encouraged to meet with an Academic Advisor.


Freshman and Running Start Students

As a newly admitted student, you are required to complete an on-campus orientation AND online orientation (via Transition 101) before you can receive your Husky ID Card.

Transfer Students

As a transfer student, you are required to complete an orientation program (either online via Transition 201 or in person) before you can receive your Husky ID Card.

Online Orientation: Transition 101 and 201

What are Transition 101 and 201?

  • Transition 101 and Transition 201 are online orientation courses that will help you transition to life as a UW Tacoma student. Transition 101/201 will provide you with an overview of resources on campus.

Why are Transition 101 and 201 important?

  • You must complete your Transition course before your on-campus orientation session.
  • You must complete your Transition course before you can get your Husky ID card.  
    • Husky I.D. cards are distributed at orientation. If you are unable to attend on-campus orientation, you may pick up your Husky I.D. beginning the Monday after orientation from the Office of the Registrar. The Office of the Registrar is located in Mattress Factory (MAT) 253, Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Which course is meant for me?

  • Transition 101 is meant for Freshman and Running Start students. Transition 201 is meant for Transfer students.

When can I take my Transition course?

  • You will receive an invitation from your UW email when Transition 101 and 201 are live.

Where can I access my course?

  • Transition 101 and 201 are located on Canvas. Canvas is UW Tacoma’s online learning system. Your professors may use Canvas to organize and present content for both online and in-person courses.

International Students

International Student & Scholar Services has prepared two different international student sessions that cover International Student specific information. Please be sure to complete the F-1 Student Visa and Health Insurance Info Session before attending New International Student Orientation on September 25.

International Students should also attend orientation programs along with domestic students. Please attend the orientation that fits your student types; Freshmen, Running Start or Transfer Students. If you have questions about the orientation requirements for international students, please contact uwtiss@uw.edu.

Family Orientation

Welcome to the University of Washington Tacoma! We encourage parents/families to attend orientation with their students to hear about resources and support services. It is an exciting time for families and we look forward to meeting and answering your questions about resources that can support your student.
