First Time in College Students

Students who have not completed any coursework in college or at a university will need to provide us with the following information. (Students who have only completed military courses for credit will complete the instructions for the first time in college students.)

How to Apply for Chapter 33 Veterans & Active Duty Transfer of Entitlement, and Chapter 35

  • You may submit the 22-1990 or 22-5490 online via the VONAPP program, or by completing the paper copies of the same documents. If you are using the hard copy versions, please make sure to bring them to our office.
  • Print copy of the confirmation for your records.
  • Complete UW Tacoma VA application.
  • Provide copy of Member 4 DD214 along with a Certificate of Eligibility.

Transfer Students with College Credits

For students who have completed coursework at a college or university prior to attending UW Tacoma, please complete the following steps. (Students who have only completed military courses for credit will complete the instructions for the first time in college students listed above.)

How to Apply:

  • You may submit the 22-1995 or 22-5495 online via the VONAPP program, or by completing the paper copies of the same documents. If you use the hard copy version, please make copies and send or bring them to our office.
  • Complete UW Tacoma VA application.
  • Provide a copy of DD214 Member 4.

Please note: If you are a Chapter 33 recipient, you will also need to turn in a copy of your certificate of eligibility.

How to apply for Chapter 1606, 1607 & 30 MGIB benefits for the first time:

  • You may apply using the VA's VONAPP online program. You will use the e-version of the 22-1990
  • You may also apply using a hard copy of the 22-190 document.
  • If using the paper copy version of the 22-1990, please make an additional copy and bring it in to the VMS office to place in your file.

How to apply for Chapter 1606, 1607 & 30 MGIB benefits if you have used one of these benefits at another institution. (or if you're changing programs within the University of Washington Tacoma)

  • You can switch your benefits from a prior institution to the UW Tacoma by using the VA's VONAPP online program. You will use the e-version of the 22-1995.
  • You may also use the hard copy version of the 22-1995.
  • If using the paper copy of the 22-1995, please make an additional copy and bring it to the VMS office to place in your file.

After you’ve applied

You must request certification every quarter to maintain benefits. Please email your final schedule to uwtva@uw.edu and request to be certified for those courses.
