UW Tacoma to host tribute event celebrating legacy of Bill Philip

The University of Washington Tacoma will host a community tribute honoring the life and legacy of Bill Philip on Monday, Oct. 26, to mark what would have been his 100th birthday.

The event, "A Tribute to the Life & Impact of Bill Philip," will bring together family members, community leaders, colleagues and friends to reflect on Philip's contributions to Tacoma, the South Sound and the University.

Known throughout the region as “Mr. Tacoma,” Bill Philip was the founder of Columbia Bank, a prominent civic leader and a driving force behind many of the community's most transformational initiatives. He died on Aug. 24 at age 99.

Among Philip’s lasting contributions was his support for UW Tacoma, where he helped advance the vision of establishing the urban-serving university and placing it within the heart of downtown Tacoma.

When discussions began decades ago about creating a new university campus in Tacoma, Philip quickly mobilized support for a UW presence in the community. His efforts helped build momentum for what would become UW Tacoma, which today serves thousands of students and plays a vital role in strengthening the South Sound’s educational and economic vitality.

In 2007, UW Tacoma honored Philip by naming William Philip Hall after him, recognizing his longstanding commitment to the university and its students. Today, the building stands as a lasting reminder of his role in shaping both the campus and the community it serves.

The tribute event, which will be held in Philip Hall, will feature reflections from community leaders and individuals whose lives and organizations were shaped by Philip’s vision and service.

The event is open to invited guests and community members. The program begins at 4 p.m. in William Philip Hall, located at 1915 Commerce St. in downtown Tacoma. A reception will follow at 5 p.m. Advance registration is required.
