Built on years of advocacy and design with formerly incarcerated leaders, Husky Post Prison Pathways officially launched with program staff and a physical space in the 2023 - 2024 academic year. The program is community engaged and fosters pathways to and through the university, beginning with people incarcerated in prison and formerly incarcerated people in the community, and ending primarily with transition to career and/or grad school but with some support of alumni as well.
Our office will work towards the following goals to help incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people identify and move toward possibilities by providing and fostering:
- advising and structured admissions support for those whose futures include higher education,
- post-release support and connection to other support providers,
- intensive first year support for transition to college and navigation of the first-year experience,
- support of a registered student organization,
- peer navigation support for moving toward and through majors and career interests as well as connecting with campus and community resources,
- an on-campus social worker for more intensive campus and community resource navigation,
career guidance, - development and maintenance of a second chance hiring education and employer network,
- a career fair for second chance employers,
- collaboration between post-prison support programs,
- development of a community of practice for universities,
- support for other state, regional, and national initiatives for post-prison higher education.
