TBGEN 485 Seminar in Sports Enterprise Management

Be ready to tackle the most significant issues in the business of sports. This class offers in-depth studies of one of the fastest growing global industries: SPORTS. Field trips to Cheney Stadium, Starfire and T-Mobile Park are planned where students will learn how to apply theory to practice. Students will find that the disciplines of the business of sports are applicable in most other business fields.

Focuses on foundations of data and analytics. Explains concepts by examining innovative uses of information systems, data, and analytics to support managerial decision-making. Explores how to collect, store, manage, and convert data into information, knowledge, and actionable insights.

Taught by Megan Mead (see profile this page), the class examines the essentials of effective sports marketing activities. Topics include sports consumption, branding, sport segmentation, delivering the sports experience, developing and communicating the brand story, and leveraging the brand through sponsorship-linked marketing. Emphasizes communication, teamwork, and strategic thinking.
TMGMT 452 Dynamics of Leadership
Mon Wed Fri 11:00 – 12:20 at TLB 109
Taught by Stan Emert, the course will feature speakers from applied leadership. These speakers include Eric Grubman, former NFL Executive Vice President, Beth Knox, Seattle Sports Commission, Randy Talbot, former CEO of Symetra Financial, Jen Mueller, pioneering broadcaster, and more. The class examines leadership as a process by focusing on a repertoire of practical and theoretical leadership principles. Provides opportunity to learn and apply leadership skills.
MINOR IN SPORTS ENTERPRISE MANAGEMENT
The minor in Sports Enterprise Management is designed for undergraduate students in any major at UW Tacoma to provide a foundational understanding and set of tools necessary to navigate the evolving environment of Sports Enterprise Management.
Most of the classes to complete the Minor are taught at Cheney Stadium, the home of the Tacoma Rainiers with free parking for students. Conveniently located just a few miles from the University campus.
The Sports Enterprise Management minor requires 25 credits:

Learning Outcomes
Students achieving a minor in Sports Enterprise Management will be able to:
- Develop and apply critical thinking and abstract reasoning skills in analyzing sport management issues and in decision making.
- Identify and analyze ethical, legal, and socio-cultural issues, and formulate responses for use in managerial decision making and policy determinations in sport.
- Employ principles of evidence-based management, strategic planning, data analytics, and financial management.
- Describe how sport is a medium for integrating gender issues, ethnic, religious, and disabilities interests.
- Apply personal ethics and ethical theory to issues in the business of sport.
- Enables students to discover evidence and determine actions to be taken to support the activities of for-profit and not-for-profit sports enterprises.
