The Institute for Innovation and Global Engagement (hereafter “IIGE”) is committed to the vision of a globally engaged campus. Its mission is to create the conditions for ethical and creative problem solving through interdisciplinary research, inclusive innovation, and community engagement. The IIGE promotes a vibrant community of learning that is welcoming and inclusive, where individuals explore and exchange ideas and collaborate for the greater good.

Students enrolled in the below IIGE's Academic and Microcredential pathways are required to read and sign the below IIGE Student Conduct Expectations Form.  These programs include the following:

Academic Pathways:

INSTITUTE FOR INNOVATION AND GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT STUDENT CONDUCT EXPECTATIONS       

The Institute for Innovation and Global Engagement (hereafter “IIGE”) is committed to the vision of a globally engaged campus. Its mission is to create the conditions for ethical and creative problem solving through interdisciplinary research, inclusive innovation, and community engagement. The IIGE promotes a vibrant community of learning that is welcoming and inclusive, where individuals explore and exchange ideas and collaborate for the greater good.

The IIGE is home to the Global Honors Program and the Global Innovation and Design (GID) Lab, through which it provides the following:

Transcripted Pathways (hereafter “pathways”):

  1. Global Honors Distinction for students graduating with a GPA of 3.3 or higher
  2. Minor in Global Engagement 
  3. Minor in Innovation and Design

Non-transcripted Microcredentials with Digital Badge (hereafter “microcredentials”): 

  1. Global Citizenship
  2. Global Leadership
  3. NextGen Civic Leader Corps
  4. Design Thinking Applied Project

Enrollment in the IIGE’s pathways and microcredentials is a privilege, entailing specific educational, financial, and experiential advantages. Students are expected to follow the IIGE Student Conduct Policy and the University of Washington Student Conduct Code outlined below.  

IIGE STUDENT CONDUCT POLICY:

Each student is expected to actively contribute to the IIGE learning community as described below:

  1. Respectful interpersonal interactions:  Students can expect to work and socialize in cohorts and small seminar style classes. These interactions pose an opportunity to establish close working relationships, and possibly close friendships too. Students are expected to maintain professional, civil and respectful interactions, whether in person or through electronic communication.
  2. Professional representation of Program:  When representing the IIGE and participating in its events, classes, and activities, students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately and respectfully at all times. This expectation applies to all forms of communication, including electronic or print media, phone conversations, and in-person interactions.
  3. Contribution to community:  Students will actively contribute to the IIGE learning environment including its co-curricular activities and social events in a positive and constructive manner. 
  4. Ethical scholarship:  Students will engage in ethical scholarship which aims to conduct original research with attentiveness to attributions. AI may only be used with explicit instructions from the professor. In no instance may work be plagiarized. 
  5. Financial stewardship:  Students will use awards and scholarships or other monies granted by the UW/UW Tacoma/IIGE for its intended purposes, and follow protocols for acknowledgment of funding. 
  6. Respect for space and property:  Students have access to privileged spaces as part of their enrollment in the Program or participation in IIGE events. These spaces (i.e. the Global Honors Reading Room, GID Lab spaces) and all equipment and resources therein, must be used responsibly, with respect for property and cleanliness, and in accordance with Program expectations.
  7. Expectations for Attendance and Program Engagement: Students will strive to attend all courses regularly and punctually, and promptly notify faculty of any irregularities in course attendance. For program-related participation, students agree to inform the IIGE Program Administrator of any changes or issues. Students will strive to respond to IIGE announcements in a timely manner and maintain high standards of communication at all times.

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON STUDENT CONDUCT CODE

Students shall adhere to the University of Washington Student Conduct Code which is Washington Administrative Code [WAC] 478-121. Students shall take special note of Academic misconduct [WAC 478-121-107] and the University of Washington’s AI policy excerpted below:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) content generators, such as ChatGPT, present opportunities that can contribute to your learning and academic work. However, using these technologies may also violate the academic standards of the University. Under the Student Conduct Code, cheating includes the unauthorized use of assistance, including technology, in completing assignments or exams.

REMOVAL FROM IIGE PATHWAY/MICROCREDENTIAL PROGRAM AND REVOCATION OF PRIVILEGES

Privileges may be revoked, and the student may be removed from the IIGE under the following circumstances:

  1. Academic or professional dishonesty – for example, plagiarism or other forms of cheating.
  2. Conduct that reflects negatively on the IIGE, the Global Honors Program, the GID Lab, or its students, faculty, and staff. 
  3. Conduct that in any way endangers, intimidates, harasses, disrespects, or discriminates against students, faculty, and staff. 

GLOBAL HONORS PROGRAM:  ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS AND REVOCATION CRITERIA

In addition to the conduct expectations outlined above, students in the Global Honors Program must also meet specific academic standards. Credentials of Global Honors distinction will be revoked if:

  1. The student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA) at UW Tacoma falls below 3.3.
    1. Under no circumstances may the student be awarded the mention “with Global Honors” or other Program distinctions on their UW transcript if they fail to complete all Global Honors course requirements with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher.
    2. If a Global Honors student’s GPA falls below the required 3.3 at any time, it must again reach 3.3 or above by the end of the following quarter for the student’s continued participation in Global Honors.
  2. The student fails to complete any of the Global Honors graduation requirements and/or has not successfully petitioned to waive the unsatisfied requirement(s). These requirements include:
    1. Successful completion of the introductory course and core seminars with minimum 3.3 GPA,
    2. Successful and timely completion of the capstone with minimum 3.3 GPA, 
    3. Capstone Presentation in the Spring Global Engagement Conference.

APPEAL PROCESS

Upon notification of removal, the student may meet with the Associate Vice Chancellor to discuss their case.  The Associate Vice Chancellor may determine that the student should indeed be removed or may advise the student to submit a written appeal to the IIGE Faculty Council for consideration. Final decision of removal rests with the Associate Vice Chancellor.

DECLARATION:

I have read and understood the criteria for removal outlined above. I agree to uphold the standards of conduct and academic expectations of the IIGE and to represent the Program to the best of my ability. I acknowledge that failure to meet these expectations may result in my being asked to withdraw from IIGE courses and be deprived of graduating with any IIGE distinctions.
