Overview:
The Associated Students of University of Washington Tacoma has two governing documents: Bylaws and Constitution. In order to make any changes to the ASUWT Constitution, the proposed changes need to pass the ASUWT Senate, Executive Board, and then approved on by the UW Tacoma student body. The 2023-2024 ASUWT Senate and Executive Board have voted on many constitutional amendments surrounding Mandatory Internal Accountability Practices, Formalization of ASUWT Taskforces, Restructuring of the Senate & Executive Board, Closing of Loopholes, and more!
In order to successfully pass these constitution changes, all amendments must receive a majority vote in a student government election.
Constitutional Amendment #1 -
Renaming Two Director Positions
The purpose of this change is to rename these two director positions to be more aligned with what the job duties of the position requires.
Constitutional Amendment #2 -
Flexibility within ASUWT Spending & Mandatory ASUWT Start
Due to the university experiencing multiple years of low enrollment, it has put a strain on ASUWT’s budget. This strain has resulted in ASUWT having periods of inactivity to due low financial resources. This change would require new ASUWT administrations to always start and end at commencement regardless of the state of the budget as well as provide flexibility to move resources around to account for lost resources.
Constitutional Amendment #3 -
Taskforce & Mandatory Student Outreach Articles
These are two completely new articles that would result in ASUWT creating student-led taskforces that would address campus issues such as Student Health & Wellness, Student Safety, Food Equity & Other Basic Needs, etc. What taskforces are made will be informed by data collected from Student Experience Surveys.
Constitutional Amendment #4 -
Mandatory Accountability Policies Within Student Government
ASUWT has faced challenges internally with regards to elected students and/or hired members of the organization completing their duties. This new article would create an accountability policy system that all paid ASUWT employees would abide by to ensure that the organization is held accountable and can effectively serve students.
Constitutional Amendment #5 -

Constitutional Amendment #6 -
Reduction of Senate Size
Currently, for every 500 students in a school, there would be a senator which results in a senate that is 15 students large. This change would result in the ASUWT Senate being decreased by 4 senators to 11. The purpose of this is to be a cost-saving measure for ASUWT during this period of low enrollment to better re-allocate resources.
Constitutional Amendment #7 -
Closing Election Loophole
Currently, there is a loophole that allows for graduate students the option to run for a school of their major rather than the graduate senator seat. To close this loophole, the choice to run for your major as a graduate senator is removed.
Constitutional Amendment #8 -
Removal of outdated language, typos, or redundant language
These changes are to remove instances of Senate and Executive Bylaws as those are no longer separate governing documents. Typos and redundancies have also been removed.
