Academic Year 2023 - 2024
Teaching to Transform
On behalf of the AAPI THRIVE project, you are invited to apply for a professional development opportunity sponsored by the U.S. Dept of Education AANAPISI Grant under the Chancellor's Initiatives. We are offering a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) dedicated to increasing faculty awareness about the talents, cultures and diverse perspectives of our Asian American and Pacific Islander students (AAPI), many of whom are first generation and Pell eligible. Together, we will ask "How do we implement teaching strategies that honor the unique experiences of our students and their communities?" Our FLC work will draw on evidence-based methods, center student voices, and engage with critical research by AAPI scholars.
The FLC will integrate aspects of the following:
- An examination of faculty positionality
- Understanding anti-racist, cultural responsive and Indigenizing pedagogies
- Fostering anti-bias learning environments
- Valuing student strengths, knowledge, agency and self-authorship
- Selection of course content and course design that is culturally relevant
- Equitable access and assessment (writing, creative projects, etc.)
- Community accountability and coalition building
We will start with establishing individualized learning goals. Faculty participants will also engage in group and self-paced activities that include discussion boards, written responses to journal articles/essays/videos and the time necessary to make revisions or additions to your syllabus, lesson plan or other classroom activity. Upon successful completion*, you will demonstrate evidence of your efforts by sharing your work with a small group of students and colleagues in a showcase format.
*To receive an addition to your salary, participants are required to participate in the final showcase and attend seven of the nine regularly scheduled meetings.

What are Faculty Learning Communities?
Unlike individual workshops, committees or taskforces, Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) inspire a continuous process of learning and developing in a supportive environment with colleagues. They can be cohort or topic based, formal or informal, discipline specific or interdisciplinary. All FLCs build community, engage in reflective practice, and develop an interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning. FLCs promote empathy, openness, and trust in order to engage complex problems while energizing and empowering participants. Most importantly FLCs have the potentional to transform educational institutions into liberatory spaces.
