Tacoma Narrows Bridge
A portion of the vertical “suspender” cable from the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge is displayed outside the Milgard Hall 326 classroom. This portion of cable was salvaged by Gene Norman Randall shortly after the tragedy in November 1940. It was donated to the university by his grandson, Jean-Paul Simon, in January 2025.
The video below tells the story of the cable, and this site provides additional history of the manufacturer, Roebling Steel, and an analysis of the cable completed by UW Tacoma Mechanical Engineering faculty and students.
