If you commute to UW Tacoma and live at least 10 miles away from the campus, give vanpooling a try. A vanpool is a prearranged group of 5 to 15 people who share their commute by using a vanpool vehicle owned, maintained and insured by Pierce Transit.
Vanpool passengers pay a low monthly fare based on daily round trip mileage and the number of riders in the van. These fares cover all costs of operating the vanpool, including fuel, insurance and maintenance.
Are you a U-PASS member? The U-PASS covers $70 of your monthly vanpool fare!
Each vanpool must have a primary driver and at least one back-up driver. Drivers must be pre-approved by Pierce Transit before operating the vanpool vehicle. Each vanpool must also have a bookkeeper, someone who is willing to collect the fares and ensure timely completion and submittal of revenue and forms to Pierce Transit. If you need help finding potential vanpool partners, check out the Rideshare Ridematch Program!
Carpooling is one of the most convenient ways to share the ride. It’s flexible to suit your schedule, saves time and money, and allows you to drive in the HOV lane.
Coordinate with friends, classmates or coworkers or use the Rideshare Ridematch Program to find potential carpool partners.
Transportation Services is also excited to offer a special carpool parking permit to eligible students and employees who choose this option. Permits may be purchased quarterly and are valid for designated stalls next to the Cragle lot.
The Rideshare Ridematch program is an automated database that identifies potential vanpool/carpool riders who live and work in the same area you do and have similar schedules. All you have to do is provide your home and work addresses, work schedule and contact information. The program then generates a list of potential carpoolers/vanpoolers for you.
Your home address is kept confidential — only your contact info is released to potential matches so that you can all get in touch with each other to see if an arrangement can be worked out.
The Rideshare Ridematch program is a cooperative effort among transportation agencies in King, Pierce and Snohomish Counties. This program provides free ridematch assistance to anyone who lives or works in the Puget Sound Region.
